Elliot Alderson works at Allsafe, a cyber security company. At night, he hacks social media accounts and bank records of his social contacts. He also uses his skills to hunt down criminals and delivers them to the police. E Corp (or, "Evil Corp"), a conglomerate and important customer of Allsafe, is hacked. Elliot can stop the attack and personally secures the evidence. On the subway, Elliot is approached by Mr. Robot. He is the leader of fsociety, the hacker group behind the cyber attack, who are operating from an abandoned seaside amusement park. Mr. Robot plans a digital revolution by deleting all of E Corp's debt records and convinces Elliot to join their cause and frame E Corp's CTO Terry Colby by manipulating the attack logs, instead of reporting fsociety to the authorities.

Elliot declines a well-paid job offer by Tyrell Wellick, the new interim CTO of E Corp. In a public video message, fsociety demands to release their head, Terry Colby, and to dissolve Evil Corp. Elliot is becoming increasingly paranoid and uses more morphine. He has gathered information against Shayla's supplier Fernando Vera and his gang, but they are the only source of suboxone. However, after Fernando abuses Shayla, Elliot turns him in. Mr. Robot wants Elliot to hack into a gas plant, causing a pipeline to blow up and destroy Steel Mountain, an adjacent offline backup storage facility for E Corp, but Elliot does not want to risk any lives. On their next meeting, Mr. Robot pushes Elliot from a railing onto the beach.

Elliot is recovering from his drop in the hospital. Mr. Robot apologize to him and Elliot believes he is off fsociety's hook now. But when fsociety leaks E Corp's emails that incriminate Colby for covering up a toxic waste leak in 1993, which caused leukemia in Elliot's father and Angela's mother, he changes his mind and returns to fsociety. Gideon is becoming suspicious and is investigating on Elliot's story of the E Corp attack.

Instead of blowing up the gas pipeline, Elliot plans to destroy the backup tapes at Steel Mountain by manipulating the climate control system, but this requires physical access, so a part of the group departs to upstate New York. Without morphine or suboxone however, Elliot is suffering from morphine withdrawal the group has to stay in a hotel. Darlene stays behind to contact her ex-boyfriend Cisco and arrange a simultaneous hacker attack by the Dark Army on other E Corp sites. After a night in a club with Elliot's neighbor, Angela fulfills Cisco's demand and infects Allsafe.
