Na Jae-min (Korean: 나재민), known professionally by the mononym Jaemin (Hangul: 재민), is a South Korean dancer, rapper, songwriter, and actor based in Seoul, South Korea. He is a member of South-Korean boy group NCT[1] and its sub-unit NCT Dream[2]

Early Life

Jaemin was born in Jeonju, South Korea on August 13, 2000. He studied at Incheon Cheong-il Elementary School; he also studied at Incheon Haewon Middle School and School of Performing Arts Seoul (SOPA). He was street-casted by SM Entertainment‘s staff while handing out posters and collecting trash as a volunteer with his mom at an event.[3][better source needed]

Career

2014–2015: SM Rookies

In 2014, Jaemin appeared on Exo 90:2014 - a reality TV Show starring Exo, alongside other members of the SM Rookies program, where they performed songs and recreated music videos of prominent 90s K-pop idols.[4]

He also featured in several SM Rookies events including SM Town Live World Tour IV before being formally introduced on April 22, 2015.

In 2015, Jaemin appeared on Disney Channel Korea's The Mickey Mouse Club as a Mouseketeer alongside other members of the SM Rookies program. The show aired from July 23 to December 17, 2015 and was hosted by Leeteuk of Super Junior.[5]

2016–present: NCT and solo endeavours

On August 25, 2016, SM confirmed Jaemin as a member of NCT and its third subgroup, NCT Dream, alongside Mark, Renjun, Jeno, Haechan, Chenle and Jisung. The group made their official debut on August 24, 2016 with the single "Chewing Gum". [6] The group follows an admission-graduation system, where they graduate from the unit after reaching the Korean age of 20 (19 years old, international age).[7][8]

On February 1, 2017, SM Entertainment announced that NCT Dream would release their first single album, 'The First'. However, Jaemin did not participate in the release due to complications from a herniated disc.[9]

He made his official return to NCT on March 4, 2018, where NCT Dream released their single, "Go", which was included in NCT's first album, NCT 2018 Empathy. It also marked Jaemin's first comeback since NCT Dream's debut. Later the same year, he made his first major comeback with NCT Dream when releasing their second Korean EP, We Go Up.

In 2018 Jaemin joined the cast for tvN's "My English Teen 100 Hours", an educational entertainment show in which the cast members were to study English intensively for 7 hours each day during 2 weeks. Following the study, the members went abroad and tested their use of English in real life.[10] In February 2019, Jaemin was casted as a main character for JTBC short web-drama "Method to Hate You", produced based on a popular webtoon of the same name.[11]

In March 2019, Jaemin came to Malaysia with NCT Dream members Jeno and Jisung, to represent K-pop stars at event "K-Wave & Halal Show", celebrating and meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-in and First lady of South Korea.[12] In July, he made a comeback with NCT Dream releasing their third Korean EP, We Boom.

In April 2020, Jaemin made a comeback with NCT Dream releasing their forth Korean EP, Reload. This EP marked a shift in NCT Dream's concept, following which the aged-based graduation system was abolished and Jaemin would continue future activities as member of NCT Dream, along with the other six original members of the group.[13]

Philanthropy

Jaemin is known for active participation in philanthropic activities since young age. In October 2018, Jaemin, along with Lucas Wong, joined the Ralph Lauren's "Pink Pony" initiative raising awareness against cancer.[14] In November 2018, Jaemin, along with UNICEF Korea Special Representative Siwon Choi, went to Vietnam and joined UNICEF's World Children’s Day celebration campaign against school violence.[15] In March 2019, Jaemin was selected to represent NCT as well as Korean youth to attend the UNICEF Korea committee's event "For Every Child", meeting with Queen Mathilde of Belgium and former President of International Criminal Court Song Sang-hyun.[16][17] In May the same year, Jaemin, along with fellow NCT Dream member Jeno, went to a slum village in Indonesia as volunteers to support the children.[18]
