National Law University Odisha (NLUO) is an autonomous law university in India located at Cuttack, Odisha. It was established in 2008 (Act 4 of 2008) under the National Law University Odisha Act, commencing its first batch from July 2009. The Institute offers undergraduate ( integrated B.A./LL.B. , B.B.A./LL.B. , and post-graduate courses ( L.L.M , M.Phil. , Ph.D ) in law.

The founding Vice Chancellor of NLUO was Faizan Mustafa. Prof. Srikrishna Deva Rao is the present Vice-Chancellor of the University.[1]

Campus[edit]

NLUO was established under the National Law University Odisha NLUO Act of 2008. Since June 2012, NLUO has been functioning from its current campus amid rivers Mahanadi and Kathajodi at Naraj.The university is spread over a 50 acres (200,000 m2) lush green campus sanctioned by the Odisha government with another 20 acres set to be allotted.

The campus boasts of a state-of-the-art infrastructure providing each student with an opportunity to explore and refine their interests. The University has two men's and women's hostels respectively, a sports complex with infrastructure supporting basketball; volleyball and tennis,an auditorium (Amphi-theater) of 1500 seating capacity, a guest house and an administrative block apart from the Academic block which consists of the Classrooms, Seminar Hall, Moot Court Hall and E-brary.

Admissions[edit]

For both the Undergraduate and Post-Graduate programs, students are accepted through the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT).

Undergraduate[2][edit]

The total intake of undergraduate students aiming to pursue either of the courses is 180. The lot is divided into 120 seats for B.A/LL.B and 60 seats for B.B.A./LL.B.. Of the 120 B.A/L.L.B. seats, 14 are reserved for scheduled tribes, 10 for scheduled castes, 4 for the disabled, 4 for foreign nationals and 10 for NRI. As of now, the University does not provide state domicile reservation. However, the state government has approved the proposal of 25% reservations which may be applicable in the coming few years. B-VOC (Bachelor of Vocation Degree) in Access To Justice Is UGC Sponsored Course,With Total Intake of 50 seats and Reservation as per Govt of India Is Applicable. The University Grant Commission Has Approved The Commencement of B-Voc Degree Course From 2018-19.

Postgraduate[edit]

[3] NLUO Offers a 1 year long L.L.M course in Corporate & Commercial Law and Constitutional Law and has an intake of 50 students divided 25 each for the streams. Out of the 25 in each stream 03 are reserved for SC, 2 for ST, 01 for Specially Abled Persons, 02 for NRi and 01 for Foreign Nationals respectively.

Student Committees and Societies[edit]

Being a fully residential university, the campus brims with fervour and enthusiasm through spirited cultural events and festivities apart from academic activities. Extra-curricular activities ranging from sports tournaments to musical performances organised through the various committees and societies bind the students from diverse cultural backgrounds in solidarity and harmony.

The Moot Society[edit]

The Moot Society (TMS) of NLUO is managed by the students under the guidance of a faculty advisor. It enjoys the mandate to coordinate all aspects of the University's involvement with Mooting. TMS with the help of the college administration extends financial assistance to students for participating in national and international level moot court competitions, and hence has been able to achieve remarkably high level of consistency in its moot court performances.

Cultural Committee[edit]

Popularly known amongst the students as the Cult Crew, the Cultural Committee of NLUO organizes various intra university cultural nights and events with an aim of building culture within the university. Hunar, the intra university talent hunt is one such event organised by the Cult Crew usually around Diwali. The Cult Crew also boasts of hosting a national cultural festival called Kairaan. The 2019 edition of this festival happened in March.

Mooting[edit]

Amongst the 19 NLUs, NLUO is best known for its fast growing mooting culture and its excellence in mooting and other such competitions.[4] NLUO has a system of forming a mooting pool through an annual Intra University Moot Court Competition (IUMCC) hosted by The Moot Society (TMS). Moots are picked up through a system of show of hands by bidding the IUMCC ranks. Some international and national moot court competitions are categorized to Open Challengers where students outside the Mooting Pool of IUMCC can compete to be allowed to represent NLUO in a moot competition.

International Maritime Arbitration Moot (IMAM)[edit]

Since 2014, NLUO has been conducting the ‘NLUO International Maritime Arbitration Moot Court Competition (IMAM) , a Flagship event of The Moot Society (TMS) of NLUO. It is India's first International Maritime Law Moot with a special focus on International Commercial Arbitration and over the years it has also earned the distinction of being one of India's best Maritime Law moot court competitions.

The 5th edition of IMAM was organised by The Moot Court Society [TMS] in association with Eastern Book Company/ SCC Online Web Edition in the month of March –April 2018. 24 teams from across the took part in this competition. As a prize, the top two finishing teams had an opportunity to intern in the Mumbai office of Bose & Mitra & Co. –one of the leading maritime and shipping law firms of the country.

Mooting Achievements[edit]

NLUO has been ranked 10 in the Mooting Premier League the 7th edition which is decided on the basis of cumulative points earned in multiple moot court competitions.[5] NLUO has recorded stellar performance in the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition. For two consecutive years 2016 and 2017 and also in 2019; NLUO has qualified for the international rounds of the prestigious moot court competition . While in 2016 it finished in top 16, in 2017 NLUO was the Semi Finalist in the world rounds and the winner of the National rounds and in 2019 it finished among the top 32 teams globally.[citation needed]

The University has also been performing well in the Price Media Law Moot Court Competition hosted by the University of Oxford . NLUO was the Runner-Up of South Asia Rounds and an Octo-Finalist in the International Rounds of the Competition in 2018 and 2019.[6]

NLUO in 2017 was the winner of the 34th BCI Moot Court Competition[7] among its other achievements. It also received the honorable mention for Runners Up in the category of Best Newcomer Team in the 18th International Maritime Law Arbitration Moot (2017) hosted by Murdoch University, Australia [8] In 2019, NLUO won the 11th Edition of the Prestigious NUJS Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF) National Moot Court competition.[9]

National Law University Odisha has been ranked 3rd for the year 2018 and 9th in the year 2019 by India Today's "India's Best Law Universities" [10] and was ranked 18th by Outlook India's "Top 25 Law Colleges In 2018".[11]
