Nicholas Caradoc Hoult[1] (born 7 December 1989)[2][3][4] is an English actor and model, best known for his roles in the films About a Boy (2002), A Single Man (2009), X-Men: First Class (2011), Warm Bodies (2013), Jack the Giant Slayer (2013), and for playing Tony Stonem in the E4 teen drama series Skins (2007–2008).

Early life

Hoult was born in Wokingham, Berkshire, the third of four children of Glenis (née Brown), a piano teacher, and Roger Hoult, a pilot for British Airways.[1][5][6] His siblings are Clarista, James, and Rosanna, and his great-aunt was actress Dame Anna Neagle.[6]

Career

Hoult attended Ranelagh School, made his professional debut in the 1996 film Intimate Relations (at the age of 7), and worked mainly in television, until the success of About a Boy, in which he played Marcus.[7] He practiced ballet along with his sisters and was in a production of Swan Lake and also The Nutcracker with the national ballet, but says he was never any good at it.[8]

While at Farnborough Sixth Form, he gained a lead role as Tony Stonem in the first two series of E4 teen drama Skins. Hoult was nominated for a Walkers Home Grown Talent Award[9] and won the Monte Carlo TV Festival Award for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series[10] for the role. In 2009, Hoult appeared in the Tom Ford film A Single Man, alongside Colin Firth and Julianne Moore. He replaced Jon Kortajarena as the face of Tom Ford eyewear for the spring 2010 collection.[11]

In 2010, Hoult was nominated for the BAFTA Rising Star Award, voted on by the British public. He has appeared in the video to The Midnight Beast song "Lez Be Friends".[12] He also voices 'Elliot' in the video game Fable III.[13] On 8 July 2010, it became public that he had been cast in the role of Beast in the X-Men spin-off, X-Men: First Class, directed by Matthew Vaughn.[14] MTV Networks' NextMovie.com named him one of the 'Breakout Stars to Watch for in 2011'.[15] In 2013, Hoult starred as the title character in the film Jack the Giant Slayer,[16] and also as the main character, "R", in the zombie romance film Warm Bodies.

Hoult is a part the newest X-Men film, X-Men: Days of Future Past, which is set to be released in 2014. Hoult, Gemma Arterton and Stephen Fry have been tapped to lend their voices to the family animation feature Once Upon a Time in the Kitchen.[17]

Personal life

For his ongoing charity work with Christian Aid, Hoult was entered into the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children's Hall of Fame in 2007.[18] Nicholas also supports the Enough Food IF campaign, a charity to end global hunger,[19] and he works closely with the Teenage Cancer Trust.[20]

On The Graham Norton Show it was revealed that Hoult's middle name of Caradoc is pronounced "Cuh-RAH-deck" which in Welsh means "The Beloved One".[21]
