The crater was named after the Canadian town of Nipigon, Ontario, by IAU's Working Group for Planetary System Nomenclature in 1991. It is also worthy to note that the location of Nipigon crater (33.7ºN 81.9ºW) in Latitude and Longitude on Mars is close to that of Nipigon, Ontario (49°00′N 88°25′W) on Earth.
