Spanish lyrics English translation
Noble patria, tu hermosa bandera
expresión de tu vida nos da;
bajo el límpido azul de tu cielo
blanca y pura descansa la paz.
Noble fatherland, your beautiful flag
Gives us life expression
Beneath your unsullied blue sky,
Peace rests, white and pure.
En la lucha tenaz de fecunda labor
que enrojece del hombre la faz,
conquistaron tus hijos
labriegos sencillos,
eterno prestigio, estimate y honor. (bis)
Through tenacious struggle from fruitful toiling
That crimsons men's faces,
Your children, simple peasants,
Secured, prestige, esteem and honor forever.
Prestige, esteem and honor forever.
¡Salve, o tierra gentil!
¡Salve, o madre de amor!
Cuando alguno pretenda
tu gloria manchar,
verás a tu pueblo valiente y viril,
la tosca herramienta en arma trocar.
Hail, O gentle homeland!
Hail, O mother of love!
Whensoever anyone should attempt to besmirch your glory
You shall witness your people be brave and robust
The rugged handtool become weapon
Salve oh Patria tu pródigo suelo,
dulce abrigo y sustento nos da;
bajo el límpido azul de tu cielo
¡vivan siempre el trabajo y la paz!
Hail, O fatherland! Your generous soil
Gives us sweet shelter and sustenance
Beneath your untainted blue sky
May peace and industry forever exist!

Zeledon original Lyrics[edit]

In the original wording by Zeledon, the first stanza read:

'Costa Rica, tu hermosa bandera,
Expresión de tu vida nos da;
Bajo el manto azul de tu cielo,
Blanca y pura descansa la paz.

The final line says:

'¡Salve, oh patria!, tu pródigo suelo
dulce abrigo y sustento nos da;
bajo el límpido azul de tu cielo,
¡Vivan siempre el trabajo y la paz!...

Important note about the English translation[edit]

This is not a direct translation but an adaption of the original text, the goal was to convey the message, the essence of the anthem, not to give a literal translation.
