The Office the President of the People's Republic of China is the office in charge of assisting the PRC President with the constitutional duties specifically entrusted to that position. Because the Presidency is held of the Paramount Leader of China, who exercises far greater authority through his role as General Secretary, the staff of the President does not play an important role in Chinese policymaking. Instead, the activities of the Office of the President are a subsidiary part of the activities of the Office of the General Secretary and, more broadly, the General of Office of the Chinese Communist Party. The head of the Office the President is always coterminously the head of the Office of the General Secretary. The predecessor of the Office of the President was the General Office of the Chairman of the People's Republic of China, which existed when Mao Zedong and Liu Shaoqi were State Chairmen. The director of the office during this period was Zhang Jingwu.
The current version of the position was created in 1993, shortly after General Secretary Jiang Zemin assumed the ceremonial position of President. The head of Jiang's Office of the General Secretary, Jia Tingan, was the Presidential office's first director. The office is frequently mentioned in Chinese media in connection with activities that the paramount leader carries out in his capacity as president.[1]
