FirstMark Capital is a venture capital firm based in New York City. FirstMark[1] invests in early-stage technology companies, frequently as the first institutional investor. Notable investments include Pinterest[2] (NYSE: PINS), Shopify[3] (NYSE: SHOP), Riot Games[4] (acquired by Tencent Holdings), DraftKings[5], Upwork[6] (NASDAQ: UPWK), InVision[7], Discord[8], Dashlane[9], Ro[10], and many more.

Among the firm's areas of focus are Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, healthcare, enterprise applications, education, financial technology, e-commerce, direct-to-consumer, and marketing technology.[11]

FirstMark was founded in 2008 by Rick Heitzmann[12] and Amish Jani[13]. The firm has raised 4 early-stage funds and 2 growth funds.

  • The first fund, for $197M, was raised in 2008.[14]
  • The second fund, for $225M, was raised in 2011. [14]
  • The third fund, for $225M, was raised in 2013. [14]
  • The fourth fund, for $275M, was raised in 2016. [14]

FirstMark has also raised two growth-stage funds.

  • The first growth fund, for $150M, was raised in 2013. [14]
  • The second growth fund, for $205M, was raised in 2016. [14]

Team[edit]

FirstMark Capital was founded by Rick Heitzmann and Amish Jani in 2008. The firm now has five managing directors: Rick Heitzmann[15], Amish Jani[16], Matt Turck[17], Beth Ferreira[18], and Adam Nelson[19].

In addition to its investment team[20], the firm employs a Platform team[21] focused on areas like corporate development, talent, content, and community[22] who are responsible for supporting FirstMark companies after an investment. FirstMark also organizes four NYC-based communities revolving around Artificial Intelligence & Big Data,[23] design and product management,[24] emerging and frontier technology,[25] and software development.[26]

The firm's most notable investments include Pinterest, [27] (NYSE: PINS), which debuted on New York Stock Exchange on April 18, 2019, as well as Shopify[28] (NYSE: SHOP). Other current and historical investments include Riot Games, creator of League of Legends (acquired by Tencent Holdings)[29], InVision,[30], Discord[8], Airbnb[31], Upwork[32] (NASDAQ: UPWK), TraceLink[33], Dashlane,[34] Starry,[35], and Ro[10] among others..

FirstMark focuses on Series A and Seed-stage investments, with capital reserved for follow-investments.
