Ping An International Finance Centre (also known as the Ping An IFC) (Chinese:平安国际金融中心) is a 115-story megatall skyscraper in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, China.[1][6] The building was commissioned by Ping An Insurance and designed by the American architectural firm Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates. It is expected to be completed in 2016,[1] thus becoming the 4th tallest building in the world.[7]

Progress

The building is located within the Central Business District of Shenzhen in Futian. Its lot of a size of 18,931 square metres was purchased by Ping An Group via auction at a price of 1.6568 billion RMB on November 6, 2007. It's foundation stone was laid on August 29, 2009 and construction started in November the same year.

In March 15, 2013 the construction process was temporarily halted, due to the suspected use of concrete made with unprocessed sea sand, which could corrode the steel structure. Construction resumed on the building after sample testing.

On the morning of July 15, 2014, upon a 10-meter long steel column being lifted to place, the skyscraper exceeded 443.8 metres in height, surpassing the KK100 tower to become the tallest building in Shenzhen.

The building topped out on April 30, 2015 and became the second tallest skyscraper in China at a height of 599 metres. The original plan was to add a 60-metre antenna atop the building to surpass the Shanghai Tower and become the tallest building in China. However, in February 2015, it was decided that the antenna would not top the tower due to the possibility that it might obstruct flight paths.[8][9][10]

Features

Upon completion, the building will contain office, hotel and retail spaces, featuring a conference center and a high-end shopping mall. The two uppermost stories will feature an observation deck. As its name suggests, it will also become the headquarters of Ping An Insurance. The building will have a total gross floor area of 378,600 square meters plus a basement area of 90,000 square meters.

Elevators

The Ping An International Finance Centre will be equipped with 33 Double Deck elevators[4] with its Destination Control going at speeds of up to 10 m/s.

Climbing Attempts

In January 2015, daredevil Malaysian photographer Keow Wee Loong climbed the incomplete building [11][12] and released video footage and a photo taken from a crane at the tower's top.

The structure was subsequently climbed by Vitaliy Raskalov and Vadim Makhorov, who also documented their ascent on video.[13]

Phase 2

A second building of the project, a 290-metre, 47-story skyscraper known as the south tower, is in its foundation stage. Construction started in April 2014 and is expected to be completed by 2018. The complex will include a planned retail bridge connecting the two skyscrapers from levels 3 through 6.[14]
