Southern Region (Serbia)
Southern Region (Serbian: Јужни регион) is a name of statistical region of Serbia formed in 2009. Serbian government will later define exact borders of this region. [1]
History
In the second century, Niš (Naissus) was the main city in Moesia Superior, which was a province of the Roman Empire. In the 11th century, Duchy of Niš was a province of the Byzantine Empire. In 1162, župan Desa was ruler around Niš. Between 1791 and 1878, Pashaluk of Niš was a province of the Ottoman Empire. In 1878, this territory became part of Serbia once again. Between 1922 and 1929, Province of Niš (Niška Oblast) was administrative unit of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. Between 1929 and 1941, the Morava Banovina was a province of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Capital city of this province was Niš.
Former proposals for creation of this region
Before formation of this statistical region in 2009, there was several proposals for creation of new administrative units in this area. Most notable proposals were made by the League of Social Democrats of Vojvodina, Democratic Party of Serbia and League For Šumadija (Šumadija Coalition).
