In Jasper, Texas, testimony begins in the trial of John William King who is accused of dragging African American James Byrd Jr. to death in an apparent hate crime. King was later convicted and sentenced to the death penalty. An avalanche wipes out the Austrian village of Galtür, killing 31 people and burying alive 57 others. The R&B trio TLC releases their third album FanMail after their five year hiatus from the release of their second album in 1994, CrazySexyCool. It debuted at #1 on this billboard 200 and spent 5 non-consecutive weeks at #1. This was the last TLC studio album released with all three original members living, rapper Lisa Lopes would die in a treacherous car accident in Honduras just three years later, in 2002. Karl's brother Walter is executed a week later, in spite of Germany's legal action in the International Court of Justice to attempt to save him. Current events of February 27, 1999 (1999-02-27) (Saturday) While trying to circumnavigate the world in a hot air balloon, Colin Prescot and Andy Elson set a new endurance record after being in a hot air balloon for 233 hours and 55 minutes. Olusegun Obasanjo becomes Nigeria's first elected president since mid-1983.
