Hello, and welcome to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant portal, with information on the rebel group controlling territory in Iraq, eastern Libya, northeast Nigeria, Syria, and others regions of the Middle East and North Africa. The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL /ˈsəl/) also translated as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS /ˈsɪs/; ad-Dawlah al-Islāmīyah fīl-ʻIraq wa ash-Shām), also known by the Arabic acronym Daʿish and self-described as the Islamic State (I.S.) is a group controlling large swaths of territory in Iraq, Libya, Nigeria and Syria, captured in its military operations in 2013 and 2014 and is designated a terrorist organization by the United Nations, the European Union, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Israel, Turkey, Indonesia, and Saudi Arabia. Its military is estimated to have between 20,000 and 100,000 fighters.

ISIL territorial claims refer to announcements of territorial control and aspirations of control by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), which is an active Jihadist rebel group in the Middle East and North Africa. No nation recognizes the organization as a state. Its goal is the foundation of an Islamic state and finally a worldwide caliphate, in accordance with Salafi Islam, by the means of military Jihad.

Samir al-Khlifawi, better known by the nom de guerre Haji Bakr, was a former Iraqi military officer and senior commander of the rebel group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). He served as the head of the group’s military council and was leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s top deputy in Syria. He was killed in Syria by Syrian rebels in January 2014
