DYK hooks that never appeared at T:DYK[edit]
IMO I think preference should always be given in portals to DYK hooks that actually appeared at T:DYK at one point - and not to make up your own hooks for a portal.
I was able to fine (33) pages of hooks from WP:Recent additions in a Google search for the term "Arctic" - why not start with those and remove hooks that were made up recently and never appeared at T:DYK? Cirt (talk) 12:24, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
- Hello there. Good comment, however, did a google wikipedia search, and all the DYKs on the portal were really really hooks used at one time or t'other. The only one I cannot find the exact wording for is Arctic haze, but it has the DYK banner on the talk page, I am still trying to find the exact hook for it. All the others were copy and paste from some DYK page or t'other. Check out the article talk pages for the little banner thingie ma bobSriMesh | talk 03:31, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
- I used this customised google search to search my DYK articles, yours seems to find some overlap, but much more than my search. Is there a way to customise to search for feature, A-class and Good articles as well? google has only found so many.SriMesh | talk 17:39, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
- Checked the history page of a Wikipedia:Recent additions 42, and a hook was removed recently, so am trying to get it put back into the archives. Checked its history page.SriMesh | talk 17:59, 19 August 2008 (UTC)

Intro[edit]
The intro text to this portal is way too long. Should be approximately 1/4 that size of text or so. Cirt (talk) 20:09, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
- Thank you for this comment as well. There are three different intros, so I am not sure which you are referring to. These rotate to give the portal a fresh look for repeated visitors. Selected introductions. The first from the Artic article introduction, is the shortest. Will try to pare the others down as well., which are a combination of other articles and need a proper edit. SriMesh | talk 03:34, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
Avoid self-referential[edit]
IMO this sort of image in a portal is way too self-referential, it will hurt its chances for WP:FPORT and just looks tacky. Cirt (talk) 00:15, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
- Got the idea from a few feature portals such as Portal:Africa, Portal:Kentucky and Portal:Oklahoma. It is OK to toast it, as I was hoping to have more of an aurora borealis effect to the logo, but it didn't work, and then I started more on the meat and potatoes of the portal again. Ended up with the midnight sun in the dark, and the the longitudinal lines commencing from the North Pole. I wanted to change the colours from the default ones, but there are no standard flag, or emblem colors to the Arctic. It seems like many flag colours feature red, white and / or blue, will have to assemble all the arctic nation flags to see if there is a theme perhaps. SriMesh | talk 03:46, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
Considerations for the portal (to do list)[edit]
The portal is still under construction.
- Will re-do appearance shortly. Started similar to Portal:Africa or Portal:Australia for two quick examples.
- Removed the wikinews news box section as there is no wiki news arctic portal nor wikinews arctic category, which the wikinews robot for bringing in fresh news content requires...will try it shortly. Have entered a request at Wikinews water pump technical to see if a robot can categorize the many late breaking arctic wikinews stories or if they must be categorized manually. Then, will make a wikinews portal, then will link all the news articles here. Should be done, there are many good articles there which are getting lost as they are getting tagged with many many country categories on them, but nothing bringing them together as pertaining to the arctic specifically.
DoneAdd a box section on selected quotes would work, have not explored the quantity of quotes relating to the actual arctic as of yet. Wikquote has real life arctic quotes as well as fictional stories and such which are set in an arctic science fiction world.
- In progress... quotations Purpose is to add single rotating quotes in same manner as the 4 each rotating DYK. This box section would be above/below the features box section.
DoneThe topics section will be changed to substitute an Arctic topic template - perhaps similar to the Antarctic topic template - I think rather than a mixture of topic templates. Or even better, will make a DPL, Dynamic Page List, of topics which would work rather stupendously as well.
- Have requested DPL to be available on Wikpedia instead of just on Wikinews.
Not doneWould like to still put rotating pictures into the category section, and categorise these pictures as well.
- Followed some portal designs by Cirt and added 2 columns and wikipedia's category symbol instead.
DoneCreate for the article talk page a Portal:Arctic template acknowledging that the article appeared on the portal. {{Arctic selected biography}} and {{Arctic selected article}}- Request that other editors have a peek at the nominations at articles and biography and have a say one way or t'other....comment support or oppose upon Some FA, GA high importance articles in the nomination section.
- Need to locate more FA, GA high importance Arctic related biographies, to try to find about 10 each biographies.
- Request if the box sections on features should be substituted into the wikiproject as well? This would eliminate the need for additions to be added in both places. The portal has used the awesome feature list started by Carcharoth in the wikiproject. The difference is the portal sub page does not list B-class articles, and the wikiproject list does acknowledge these high and top priority articles and biographies...
DoneChange DYK box section to use {{Template:Random subpage}}.- Add more portals. Need to add the children of related portals added as well...as per wikiprojects.
DoneShould there be a statistics or quick facts section? Many Geography and places are adding their statistics or quick facts similar to an infobox. For exampleL Largest cities,Murmansk (population 325,100), Norilsk (135,000), Vorkuta (85,000). Tromsø (62,000),Rovaniemi (58,000). depth at North Pole 4,261 metres (13,980 ft), indigenous population listEvenks, Inuit, Chukotka, Koryaks, Nenets, Khanty, Chukchi, Sami, and Yukaghirs., countries parts of Canada, Greenland (a territory of Denmark), Russia, the United States (Alaska), Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Finland. Lapland?? - (subarctic?), water bodiesArctic Ocean , Nickname North Pole, Circumpolar North, Greek Namearktos (άρκτος) ,Bear (referring to the big dipper) Any other suggestions?
- Added this as there will be boundary changes from now until the year 2013, and this issue is in the news now.
DoneAdded complete sub page tabbed section on wikiprojects, as the arctic is an assemblage of many wikiprojects, brought together by wikiproject:Arctic, and in this way a comprehensive to do list can be assembled from all wikiprojects, and to do can be substituted into the wikiproject as well if desired.
- Now to fill in the to do box with items to do from the various projects
- Added tab sections for statistics and wikiprojects.
DoneIn progress - Must relook at wikicode, have too large of a space right now, will fix.
DoneShorten the introductions. Create 6 introductions out of the existing 3 introductions. Check length of articles and shorten biographies.
- There are now 6 various main page introductions compiled from about 6 various arctic wikipedia articles SriMesh | talk 02:17, 24 August 2008 (UTC)

Other suggestions[edit]
Hopefully if the wikiprojects uses importance ratings, the *really* Arctic wildlife will get featured and can gradually replace some of the stuff used here. e.g. Bowhead Whale instead of Right whale. We should really include stuff like Polar bear. But for now, I suppose this will have to do. Maybe a note at the wikiproject might prompt people to work more on Portal:Arctic/Selected_biography#Nominations? Carcharoth (talk) 01:40, 23 August 2008 (UTC)
- I came across here randomly after seeing Bob Marshall (wilderness activist) linked to the Project, but would Knut (polar bear) (FA) fit here? Just a heads up if more affiliated articles are needed. He may be German, but his roots are quite Arctic, you know. :) María (habla conmigo) 22:46, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
Hi. I don't know where else to put this, but I have hard evidence that Cook was not the first to the North Pole. This is going to sound crazy, but my great-grandfather wrote a letter to multiple newspapers making the story up, and Cook jumped on the wagon once the stories were published. I have pictures of his letter, the article in The New York Times, and an audio recording from I think like a couple decades ago I think of my great-aunt asking my great-grandfather questions about the story. He actually starts the story by laughing and asking what the statute of limitations is on something like this. Since he has long since passed away, and no one else in my family seems to care about putting it out there, I figured I would be the one to volunteer the information. I don't know much about how this all works, but if someone wants to help include the information, I would be more than happy to send the text, image, and audio files. mac3100 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 00:53, 16 November 2018 (UTC)
Norwegian polar names database[edit]
The Norwegian Polar Institute has lauched a database of Norwegian names in the polar regions and all names in the Norwegian areas in the Arctic and Antarctic. Name database. Inge (talk) 21:06, 19 December 2011 (UTC)
