This page is a portal to aviation information and articles throughout the Wikipedia. You should be able to easily navigate to an area of aviation interest through this page, but, if you think you can improve the page then be bold. Add sections, change organization, anything. If its an improvement then it will stand the test of time.

Improvement drive

The article on Transportation is currently nominated on Wikipedia:This week's improvement drive. Vote for Transportation there.--Fenice 09:10, 8 August 2005 (UTC)

I dealt with concerns raised so far in nomination discussion. I do think that the "list" box needs to be formatted like the rest of them. — TheKMantalk 20:39, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

Articles for the Wikipedia 1.0 project

Hi, I'm a member of the Wikipedia:Version_1.0_Editorial_Team, which is looking to identify quality articles in Wikipedia for future publication on CD or paper. We recently began assessing using these criteria, and we are looking for A-class, B-class, and Good articles, with no POV or copyright problems. Can you recommend any suitable articles? Please post your suggestions here. Thanks a lot! Gflores Talk 17:40, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

Things You Can Do

The section is not appearing correctly. It is blank except for one picture. I checked it's history for vandalism, but this does not appear to be the cause. --GW_Simulations 23:41, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

Suggestion

Could I propose that an "Aircraft of the month" section is added, showing a picture of an aircraft, and a brief description of it, along with important specs. --GW_Simulations 17:46, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

good idea. I'm going on vacaton today but feel free to implement it yourself. One suggestion though - don't use any pictures already slated for the pic of the month.- Trevor MacInnis (Talk | Contribs) 11:33, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
I've created a mirror page of the portal, which includes the section. Any comments would be welcome. --GW_SimulationsTalk | Contribs 12:13, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
I just checked it out and I think it would be a great addition to the page. I think the first few steps would be:
  1. Set up a series of pages that will auto-update like the other "of the month" boxes.
  2. Decide on a list of planes to use. (interesting, historical, etc.)
I'll start on it soon unless you want to have a go.

- Trevor MacInnis (Talk | Contribs) 01:29, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

Just another note, I think it should be called Selected Aircraft. This would put it in line with the other "Featured content" and allow us to change it monthly or (if we find enough interesting aircraft) weekly or daily. - Trevor MacInnis (Talk | Contribs) 14:09, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
Done. --GW_Simulations|User Page | Talk | Contribs | E-mail 20:52, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

If you want to nominate an aircraft for it, then see the nominations page. One other thing, where do you suggest it goes? --GW_Simulations|User Page | Talk | Contribs | E-mail 21:16, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

I think it should go just above the "Today in" box. But first lets create an aircraft for at lease every month to begin eith, using the aoutomatic update format. I'll start now with the two already chosen. - Trevor MacInnis (Talk | Contribs) 01:43, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
Oops, spoke to soon, I see you've already got it formated correctly. Lets make a quick list for the next year and get it online. - Trevor MacInnis (Talk | Contribs) 01:47, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
I've put the Pregnant Guppy in again for October, seeing as it is hardly getting a fair run now. I suggest implementing on July 1st at as close to midnight GMT as possible. --GW_Simulations|User Page | Talk | Contribs | E-mail 19:29, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
I've done it early, because I cannot wait up much longer (well, OK, I'll be honest, I got my time conversion mixed up). I've put a message in for users who are still in June saying that it will start working at midnight, --GW_Simulations|User Page | Talk | Contribs | E-mail 22:53, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

Final poll to implement Selected Aircraft

SPATRA

Hi guys! we are translating article LAPA flight 3142 from Spanish into English and we're having a hard time finding some word in English. Could someone with technical knowledge give us a hand with the technical stuff? Please, take a look at the questions in Talk:LAPA flight 3142, and maybe keep it in your watchlist for future dubts. Thanks a bunch. Mariano(t/c) 14:26, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

Questions answered, and the translation is now complete. The article could still use some copyediting from knowledgeable editors - Draeco 05:30, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

Evening out the columns

Two things (well really one thing with two problems. Sometimes the right and left colums are seriously uneven. This happens when a Today in Aviation has a lot (or very little) of items. There are two ways I belive this can be fixed.

  1. Make every date in the "Today In" box the same size by limiting or adding to them. I
  2. Use meta-templates to automatically shuffle around boxes depending on the total lenght of each side.

There are bad and good things about each option, but if there are ideas on how to approach this I'm all ears. - Trevor MacInnis (Talk | Contribs) 04:06, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

I too would like to voice my opinion in shuffling them. --Siva1979Talk to me 03:27, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

Selected Biography

Is this something that would work here? If we can come up with a list of, say, 24 different interesting people in the field of aviation (not just pilots but designers, airline owners etc.) then maybe it's something to consider. Any suggestions? - Trevor MacInnis (Talk | Contribs) 21:25, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

Suggstions:

GW_Simulations|User Page | Talk | Contribs | E-mail 10:37, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

I've created a base page. - Portal:Aviation/Selected biography. --GW_Simulations|User Page | Talk | Contribs | E-mail 09:44, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

Sorry, I should have mentioned... See: Portal:Aviation/Selected Biography, Portal:Aviation/Selected Biography/archive. But let's use your capitaization format page, it makes more sense. I'll move the page as soon as I get back tonite, gotta go. - Trevor MacInnis (Talk | Contribs) 16:42, 16 July 2006 (UTC)
Done, everything is ready to go, just need to create the pages now. - Trevor MacInnis (Talk | Contribs) 06:59, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
A few more to do:

... - Trevor MacInnis (Contribs) 03:32, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

Can I make a few more suggestions?:

-- Adz|talk 05:31, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

Suggestion

I think that to improve this portal we need a selected biography. I also think that this portal should be updated more often. JJ 20:08, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

Please read this page before posting requests. We are already working on one. --GW_Simulations|User Page | Talk | Contribs | E-mail 20:06, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
What do you mean by "updated more often". Right now the selected items are updated automaticaly each month and the anniversaries change every day. If we can come up with more selected pic/aircraft/etc then it can be worked to have them update every week or two. If you have any specific suggestions them please share them, I'd love to keep this portal up to Featured Portal standards. - Trevor MacInnis (Contribs) 20:33, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

New Portal Format

I've been doing some work to address the uneven columns issue, and come up with this. Comments? Suggestions? - Trevor MacInnis (Contribs) 22:17, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

It doesn't display too well on my PC. All the sections are overlapping. --GW_SimulationsUser Page | Talk 11:39, 1 October 2006 (UTC)
Can I get a screenshot? Would limiting the different sections to specific sizes help? - Trevor MacInnis (Contribs) 06:18, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

Selected Biography

In the section where the seleceted biography should be there is a redlink which says,Portal:Aviation/Selected biography/January 2007. JJ 00:05, 6 January 2007 (UTC) I'm sorry if it has been fixed.

Oops, they were just dated wrong...fixed now, but more biographies are still needed for future months, dig in people! - Trevor MacInnis (Contribs) 01:09, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

I have question there regarding the lift of a wing that is designed with washout. Any experts here who could help me? Thank you. 84.173.205.5 19:16, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

Every pilot, designer, and builder has an opinion about washout, but you may not need it all. What is your question? BomberJoe 22:41, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

Selected aircraft picture

The picture of the An-224 has been deleted off of Wikipedia as a duplicate of an image available on WikiCommons without pointing to duplicate image. Currently, there is a redlink on the portal where an image of the An-224 should be. --Born2flie (talk) 12:15, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

help?

Richard Vogt (aircraft designer) - a new article.... has sources that talk about U.S. designs for a nuclear powered plane and a ww2 plane that could travel 9,000 miles. Its all sourced ... but is the source correct? I find it incredible. Can someone overcheck? I have no axe to grind but want to ensure we don't undermine wikipedia... if its correct then apologies to all. Victuallers (talk) 21:46, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

Incidents and accidents

Most airlines have an 'Incidents & Accidents' section. Time and again, people with a vested interest try to remove or censor such information. The airlines have a vested interest in filling their Wiki articles with nice information about the features in each class of travel (as they do on their own websites), and removing negative information about incidents. It has been brought to my attention that there is a Aviation Portal sample template which states:

**Accidents or incidents should only be included if:
*** The event was fatal to either aircraft occupants or persons on the ground;
*** The event involved hull loss or serious damage to the aircraft or airport;
*** The event resulted in changes to procedures, regulations or processes affecting airports, airlines or the aircraft industry.

While these criteria may satisfy the interests of an aviation buff, I think we should treat aviation incidents like other incidents. That if there is significant coverage by multiple major media outlets, then it should be included in the Wikipedia article. An example is the recent crash of US Airways Flight 1549 into the Hudson River, NY. Probably a straight forward bird strike. No deaths. No serious injuries. No changes as yet to flight procedures. But tremendous media interest, and huge public interest. The criteria need changing, to allow incidents to be included that have received significant coverage. --Lester 22:42, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

If you would all be so kind as to review the issue being discussed at this article and weigh in with your opinion I would appreciate it. We'd like to incur a larger, more objective, unemotional share of input then what exists right now. Thank you very much for your time and we really appreciate it. 68.52.42.38 (talk) 05:58, 16 August 2009 (UTC)

Replace Space articles?

Can the Space articles be replaced by more aviation specific articles at Portal:Aviation/Selected article? The two in question are Apollo 8 and Space Race. These are covered by WP:SPACE and WP:WikiProject Spaceflight projects. Thanks. -Fnlayson (talk) 19:28, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

OK no comments received. I replaced Apollo 8 with A-class British Airways. -fnlayson (talk) 07:41, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

Tigerfish Aviation

Hey, I'm not Wikipedia experienced, but am trying to write an article on the new class of float type aircraft. I have papers on it that cost money in a PDF format. It took way too much of my time to be deleted in a second. So, if you can help me out in any way, that would be great! I thought about editing it in the seaplane and floatplane section. Here is an external link. http://www.tigerfishaviation.net/index.html and http://www.aviationweek.com/aw/blogs/aviation_week/on_space_and_technology/index.jsp?plckController=Blog&plckBlogPage=BlogViewPost&newspaperUserId=a68cb417-3364-4fbf-a9dd-4feda680ec9c&plckPostId=Blog%3aa68cb417-3364-4fbf-a9dd-4feda680ec9cPost%3acd60a1cb-1736-443f-bada-1db8c2f8aee9&plckScript=blogScript&plckElementId=blogDest . There is a youtube and PDF file on the DHC-6 Twin Otter for RAPT system. Thanks Johnnywes05 03/13/2010 —Preceding undated comment added 17:49, 13 March 2010 (UTC).

Preserved aircraft

Category:Preserved aircraft; A new category which already had some media (pix) in it. Only one aircraft in it, but probably others under Category:Individual aircraft. Hugo999 (talk) 04:56, 5 April 2010 (UTC)

This talk page is for the portal itself. Try asking at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Aviation or WT:WikiProject Aircraft. -Fnlayson (talk) 13:27, 5 April 2010 (UTC)

Engineering portal

Hey chaps, great portal I can see why its featured! I'm trying to update the engineering portal somewhat and I was hoping you'd consider putting up our portal ad in your related portals section...also if any of you are engineers please come on over to the - Wiki project - and see if you can help out! Even if its just putting your name down as someone who can peer review would be a massive help or even just voting on the monthly selected article/image. Many thanks in advance Sam Lacey (talk) 13:54, 21 May 2010 (UTC)

two missing airlines

Im from the german wikipedia and like to say that there are missing two airlines in the en.wiki: de:Star Airways and de:Belle Air Europe. For both of them there are pictures on commons and maybe one of the english users cut write 2 articles sbout them. thanks.--Wingtip (talk) 12:20, 15 April 2011 (UTC)

(No traffic here?) Anyway, are there more articles that have been copied between WP and aviation-safety.net? --Mopskatze (talk) 21:51, 24 April 2013 (UTC)

Wikipedia pages can be copied, but proper attribution/credit should be provided. The other way where text is copied and pasted to Wikipedia is usually a copyright violation. It's better to post questions like this on more fitting venues, such as WT:AVIATION and WT:AIR. Less likely to get missed and so forth on those two pages. -Fnlayson (talk) 22:14, 24 April 2013 (UTC)
I have also placed this on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Aviation/Aviation accident task force, which seems to be the most appropriate place. So en:WP has portals, projects, task forces, ... - and this portal looks abandoned. --Mopskatze (talk) 23:01, 25 April 2013 (UTC)

Sfax–Thyna International Airport

The article on Sfax–Thyna International Airport needs to be rewritten, please, ideally by someone, who can translate the equivalent section in the French Wikipedia. Unfortunately, I don't speak French. --NearEMPTiness (talk) 20:39, 28 October 2013 (UTC)

This talk page is only for the Aviation Portal pages. As mentioned in the section above, WT:AVIATION is the more fitting talk page for such requests. -Fnlayson (talk) 20:56, 28 October 2013 (UTC)
