Did you know... Archive[edit]

As the list of Did you know s is so long, can we have a Did you know archive?--Jeya Vaishnavi 13:00, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

Portal Overhauling[edit]

Hi All Harry Potter fans,

This portal has been overhauled. It is more ordered now. The earlier content remains with some archiving, but I just restructured it to help archiving and posting better. New section(Featured Creature) has been added. Other changes include shortening & updating of the news, shortening the quotes and the Did You Know sections and adding of related Wikiprojects.

Here are some tips:

  • If you are adding new material, in Did you know, News, and Quotes, Limit total to 5.
  • For most sections, when you click on edit you will get the section page, Example For selected article: Portal:Harry_Potter/Selected_article
  • For the archives, you can try Portal:Harry_Potter/Selected_article/Archive or click on archive.
  • In future, if you want to add an article to selected article or selected creature or news, please add the current article into the archive before removing and add the new one.

Hopefully, we can make this a featured portal soon.

Just got an edit done that allows for advance planning of selected articles. I'll try to do the same with other sections in the portal. Shrewpelt (talk) 15:01, 1 March 2008 (UTC)

Portal Template[edit]

Is there a portal template? Cheers! Wassupwestcoast 07:00, 10 November 2007 (UTC)

The quotes section has been vandalised, but when I try to edit it a different page comes up. I don't know how to fix it. (talk) 23:31, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

The quotes section is a subpage. To edit it, go the the page Portal:Harry Potter/Quotes. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Panther991 (talkcontribs) 12:07, 24 July 2009 (UTC)

Quotes page...[edit]

On the quotes page, an anonymous user added a quote something like: Hermione: "Breaking rules is sort of fun, isn't it?" Ron: "Who are you and what have you done with Hermione Granger?" I have never seen that quote before in the books. I mean maybe I'm forgetting it, but I know every other quote on the page other than this one. And I'm not saying that it being made by an anonymous user makes it investigation-worthy, but has anyone ever seen this quote before? (Maybe it was from one of the movies.) ... -Panther 01:37, 24 July 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Panther991 (talkcontribs)

I only remember the quote from the movie. --Longio (talk) 14:46, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

Quote spoilers[edit]

I may think that some of the quotes are spoilers to people that only watch the movies. ?--Longio (talk) 14:48, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

Good day to everyone. Portal:Harry Potter/seriesbox seems to be redundant and disused, and hasn't been edited since last year. I wonder whether there is still a use for it, or it has been simply forgotten and its deletion would be a desirable course of action. Waltham, The Duke of 11:32, 5 September 2009 (UTC)

Anyone? Waltham, The Duke of 15:18, 20 December 2009 (UTC)

I observe that the boxes on the portal page are all too wide for the browsers screen forcing you to scroll (I use Classic skin, not monobook). But more worryingly, the Harry Potter infobox template at the end of all the articles is the right width when hidden and far too wide and unscrollable when shown. That needs an urgent fix. The template is too complex for me to have a go at fixing it. -- SGBailey (talk) 11:33, 11 January 2010 (UTC)

Harry Potter navbox[edit]

I use classic skin, not monobook. The Harry Potter navigation box at the bottom of the many HP pages is fine when hidden, but when shown, it grows to a width wider than many browsers, especially if not full screen. I have left a message on the HP portal talk page, but if anyone here knows how to fix it I would be grateful - it is too complex a template for me to tackle. -- SGBailey (talk) 12:47, 14 January 2010 (UTC)

browser + version ? —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 12:53, 14 January 2010 (UTC)
Ah the template has a minimum width of around 970px due to the top row with the titles of the books. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 12:58, 14 January 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, it runs slightly outside my screen too on the monobook skin (sidebar included).--Unionhawk Talk E-mail 12:59, 14 January 2010 (UTC)
If it is going to have a fixed width in pixels, I suggest 640 for a full screen VGA monitor. It would be better if it were dynamic though. -- SGBailey (talk) 15:05, 14 January 2010 (UTC)
Well it doesn't have fixed width, it really has a minimum width. This is caused because that first line is a table inside a div inside a tablecell. Tables take as much space as needed to render their content, I'm not really sure how to fix this without totally changing the design of the template. The HP guys should discuss this. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 15:38, 14 January 2010 (UTC)
end of repost -- SGBailey (talk) 13:16, 15 January 2010 (UTC)

Thoughts on canon Vs non-canon[edit]

Hi, looking though many of the harry potter related pages, I find many of the pictures are from the Harry Potter films. For example, the infobox of Harry_Potter_(character) has a Radcliffe picture with a caption "Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix". This seems to be a common theme in many of the other pages. The main pictures that represent the topic is from the films. The caption mentioned above suggests (to me) that the picture is canon, which, in my opinion, it is not.

I tried to look for a precedent in wikipedia (a hard thing to precedent Harry Potter), and found the Lord of the Rings pages. These seem to contain much less film-related images. When looking at the Lord of the Rings character pages, most don't have a picture in the main infobox. Instead they have a section (title Adaptations - see Gandalf#Adaptations for example) that has a picture (usually, one from each of the two films).

My general inclination is to have a clear separation between canon and non-canon material. For the images, I think this means:

  • Remove most film images from pages such as Harry_Potter_(character)
  • With the exception of such images as (for example) the train on the Harry Potter page (in the Films section).
  • Replace pictures where possible with original work from the author (I know Rowling drew a Snape picture and a Peeves - there must be more).
  • If non-canon images are necessary, draw from a wider pool than just the films (like cover art... can't think of much more than this... maybe fan art)
  • Reduce the number of images
  • Where it is necessary to have a film image, state that it is from the film. (for example, "Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter from the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" (or something like that)

What are your thoughts on this? --Boy.pockets (talk) 06:10, 26 November 2010 (UTC)

Harry Potter portal link[edit]

I want some opinions many of the pages that have the link to the portal on them. The link is at the bottom of the page and sometimes in the external links section. Do you think that we should move them closer to the top of the page so that more people see the link and the link is easier to find? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Moonstonecastle77 (talkcontribs) 18:19, 4 August 2011 (UTC)

The page sounds like and Ad[edit]

The page sorta sounds like an advertisement. Especially the top banner under the words HARRY POTTER PORTAL. ZSpeed (talk) 13:07, 4 August 2012 (UTC)

InfoBox changes?[edit]

With Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, we are reaching uncharted waters. We're gonna have five movies, with its own soundtracks, games, etc.

I'm proposing a change for the infobox: From "The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling" to "J.K. Rowling's Wizarding World", as she is describing it now.

We could have a space for Harry Potter, another one for Fantastic Beasts and be ready for more future works. What do you think? Rodrigo-hp (talk) 19:21, 6 November 2016 (UTC)
