suggestion - instead of 'formerly also called Lamaism' , put 'sometimes mistakenly reffered to as Lamaism' or somethink in those lines; I think the term Lamaism is considered offensive and no contemporary writers use it; this formulation presents it as legitimate, though out of fashion.

What exactly is wrong with the term Lamaism? Saimdusan Talk|Contribs 02:15, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
Lamaism is a term that was used to describe Tibetan Buddhism to minimize it's significance by implying that it was the worship and thoughts of Lamas - not Buddhism. It would be like calling Irish people, individuals who were formerly called Micks. It's both not true and not appropriate. --Fastslack (talk) 02:04, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
Do you have a reliable source that mirrors what you are claiming about the word? And by that I mean, a source that says that people who use 'Lamaism' use it with derogatory intent. That Tibetan Buddhists prefer Tibetan Buddhism to emphasize the connection with Buddhism is fine, but to say that users of 'Lamaism' are trying to "minimize the significance" of Tibetan Buddhism may be inferring too much. Vajrayana Buddhism Portal[edit]

DYK? there is already a portal Portal:Vajrayana Buddhism which is operational (although neglected). It covers Shingon as well as Tibetan buddhism - or should cover Shingon - and so thus already incorporates a Tibetan Buddhism portal. I've just started maintaining it so who knows... maybe it'll get more use ;-) Dakinijones (talk) 20:37, 23 June 2008 (UTC)

DEFAULTSORT & listas parameter for Dalai Lama articles[edit]

As you may know, the DEFAULTSORT value on an article determines an article's place in a listing and the listas parameter does the same for the Talk Page of the Article. If these values are not present the Dalai Lama articles would be in the order of their page names, 10th Dalai Lama, 11th Dalai Lama, 12th Dalai Lama, 13th Dalai Lama, 14th Dalai Lama, 1st Dalai Lama, 2nd Dalai Lama, etc.

Right now I am working on the Category:Pages with DEFAULTSORT conflicts but soon I will be finished and will move on to Category:Biography articles without listas parameter. The first item on that list is the Talk page for the article on the 13th Dalai Lama. I do not know why that is the only one, none of the other 13 have the parameter either.

I have found in my prior dabbling in this issue that I can sometimes use the DEFAULTSORT value on the article page but in these cases that is also missing. As neither the listas parameter nor the DEFAULTSORT value affect the name of the page how would you like these pages to be sorted? I am leaning toward using as both the listas parameter and the DEFAULTSORT value "Dalai Lama 01", "Dalai Lama 02", through to "Dalai Lama 13", "Dalai Lama 14", thereby keeping them all together and in order.

Does that make sense?

There is no big hurry on this. I will not be finished with Category:Pages with DEFAULTSORT conflicts before the end of the month. Either answer here or on my talk page. I am not asking any of the other projects who have banners on these pages because I am certain that all those groups' non-Tibetan members put together do not care about these articles nearly as much as one of the members of your project cares.

Notice of Requested move: Iṣṭadevatā (Buddhism) → Yidam[edit]

I have requested that the article e Iṣṭadevatā (Buddhism) be moved back to it's original title Yidam. The article was previously moved on grounds of consistency with the tiles of other related articles with which are derived from Sanskrit - however, as I have outlined on the article's talk page here, the Hindu term Iṣṭadevatā is not actually used in Buddhism and is found nowhere in Sanskrit or Tibetan Buddhist texts (it does occur in some outdated western books which conflate Buddhist tantra with Hinduism) - and the current title (and some of the current content) only perpetuate that mis-information. The terms "Yidam" or "meditation diety" are now most commonly used in reliable English language books on Buddhism - so I am requesting a move back to the original title: Yidam. per WP:COMMONNAME

@CFynn: This is the talk page for discussing improvements to the portal; few editors will be watching here. You would do better to notify the article's Wikiprojects, at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Tibet and Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Buddhism. -- John of Reading (talk) 11:34, 15 December 2014 (UTC)
@John of Reading: OK will do. I have already pinged previous editors of that article - but I'm not sure how many of them are still active. Chris Fynn (talk) 11:46, 15 December 2014 (UTC)

Svatantrika-Prasaṅgika distinction[edit]

I have just undertaken an extensive edit of this page and need help with a subsection on modern scholarship and the subsection of Svatantrika. I could also use some sources about the Svatantrika-Prasangika according to non-Gelugpa scholars of the Tibetan Tradition. Your thoughts would be appreciated!
