News[edit]

I added a couple of news items to the portal. I'm not sure if this is how it is supposed to work. Comments? Ideas? Derek Andrews (talk) 12:38, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

Wikimedia box[edit]

I have serious reservations about the inclusion of this box. All but one of the items lead to dead ends, and in some cases I can't see this ever changing. The link to commons has useful material, but also a lot of OT, stuff too.

I feel that this is not good practice for a portal page, where presumably we want to show off the best of what we have to offer, not lead visitors on a wild goose chase. My vote would be to move the box to the project page where editors might find it useful for research, then add material from there to articles. Derek Andrews (talk) 12:49, 28 November 2008 (UTC)

The box, as it stands is a lot of dead ends. I'm intending to work on this to actually make the links live. Give me a week or so! Mayalld (talk) 13:46, 28 November 2008 (UTC)
Fair enough. Thanks.Derek Andrews (talk) 13:50, 28 November 2008 (UTC)
I have commented it out for the time being. The only link that went anywhere vaguely useful was the commons, and that was not exactly on topic.--Derek Andrews (talk) 13:19, 25 February 2009 (UTC)
Fair enough. I've not had the time to deal with it. If I ever get it sorted, it can go back in.

Portals Documentation[edit]

For reference sake, documentation for the coding behind the structure of Portals is at Wikipedia:Portal/Instructions.

Archiving[edit]

I have updated the archive pages for selected article, selected photo and news. They all automatically display the last 6 months of content, and have a table that provides links to all archived pages. The table is good through to 2020, so apart from bugs and formatting changes we don't have to worry about manually archiving. --Derek Andrews (talk) 13:28, 25 February 2009 (UTC)

Looks good!! Mayalld (talk) 13:31, 25 February 2009 (UTC)
I have also created Template:No selected item that checks if selected articles and selected photos exist for next month. I have added it to the top of the Project page and the Project talk page. If either selected item is missing for next month, a banner will be displayed, starting the 25 of each month. They can also be added to our user and user talk pages if we wish. --Derek Andrews (talk) 16:16, 26 February 2009 (UTC)
Yes, saw that, and was impressed. Nice bit of coding. Mayalld (talk) 16:24, 26 February 2009 (UTC)

River Usk[edit]

Does anyone know why the River Usk appears in the list of river navigations? The article is not part of UKW, and makes no mention at all that it is navigable. Bob1960evens (talk) 12:02, 7 September 2011 (UTC)

Notice from the Portals WikiProject[edit]

WikiProject Portals is back!

The project was rebooted and completely overhauled on April 17th, 2018. Its goals are to revitalize the entire portal system, make building and maintaining portals easier, support the ongoing improvement of portals and the editors dedicated to this, and design the portals of the future.

As of May 2nd, 2018, membership is at 60 editors, and growing. You are welcome to join us.

There are design initiatives for revitalizing the portals system as a whole, and for improving each component of portals. So far, 2 new dynamic components have been developed: Template:Transclude lead excerpt and Template:Transclude random excerpt.

Tools are provided for building and maintaining portals, including automated portals that update themselves in various ways.

And, if you are bored and would like something to occupy your mind, we have a wonderful task list.

From your friendly neighborhood Portals WikiProject. Hope to see you there. Sincerely,    — The Transhumanist   07:48, 2 May 2018 (UTC)

Move discussion in progress[edit]

Requested move 17 May 2018[edit]

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the move request was: consensus to move the pages at this time, per the discussion below. However, only 100 pages can be moved at a time in a move request, so it will take a while to find and move the remaining subpages. Dekimasuよ! 03:35, 25 May 2018 (UTC)

Portal:UK WaterwaysPortal:UK waterways – Case fix. Not a proper name. Since portal titles show up in articles they should follow MOS:CAPS. Dicklyon (talk) 18:27, 17 May 2018 (UTC)

  • Support—yep, this should be a simple fix. Otherwise it looks like a transport company. Tony (talk) 04:19, 18 May 2018 (UTC)
  • Please don’t do slow page by page landscape shifting. Go to WT:Portals do an RfC the confirm that MOS applies to Portal titles. Previously, portals have been a system on the outside, there is good reason to mark the shift properly. —SmokeyJoe (talk) 23:38, 18 May 2018 (UTC)
OK, I'll do that next. When a multi-RM was tried to fix the handful of portals not conforming to MOS:CAPS, the problem was that all sorts of opposition on individual cases, not related to the caps question per se, made it flail and fail. So I'm trying a few simple ones; if these are OK, we can go back and get a consensus on the principle, distinct from the questions of the particular titles, I think. Dicklyon (talk) 14:26, 19 May 2018 (UTC)
  • Support per norm. --Comedora (talk) 05:00, 20 May 2018 (UTC)
  • Support: This is a sentence-case site, for everything reader-facing, from articles to categories, and portals are not a magical exception. We even use title case for editor-facing policy and project pages for the most part, even if we tolerate title case for wikiprojects (and only some of them don't use sentence case; we should probably normalize all of them to it).  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  02:53, 23 May 2018 (UTC)
