It does not mean "winged fish", as Murchison (1839) incorrectly claims, but rather "winged one". Although Agassiz at the time did believe Pterygotus was a fish, there is no "fish" element in its name. Compare with the name Pterygota used for the subclass of winged insects; this is the plural of the same word. undo
