RTVC Sistema de Medios Públicos ("RTVC Public Media System", RTVC SMP) is Colombia's state-owned national broadcaster, controlled by the Ministry of Information Technologies and Communications.

It was created as Radio Televisión Nacional de Colombia (RTVC, National Radio and Television of Colombia) by the Decree 3525 on October 28, 2004, after dissolving Inravisión and the public television production company Audiovisuales, during the administration of President Álvaro Uribe Vélez. RTVC SMP includes three television channels, two broadcast radio networks and two online radio stations. Its headquarters are located at 26th Street and 45th Avenue (Calle 26 con Carrera 45) in Bogota.

Between 2013 and 2015 it was rebranded as Señal Colombia Sistema de Medios Públicos.

Public radio and TV stations in Colombia operated by SCSMP[edit]

RTVC SMP has three national television stations (one of which is 25% programmed by the system and 75% by private companies) and two national radio networks.


In digital television, RTVC SMP broadcasts its DVB-T2 multiplex on channel 16 nationwide.

Señal Colombia[edit]

Señal Colombia is devoted to educational and cultural content and is RTVC SMP's flagship channel. It is the national public television channel, intended as educational and cultural space for creation, knowledge and interviews. Señal Colombia is intended to be reflective of Colombia and Colombians in its spoken and artistic culture. In addition, it carries stories that connect viewers to the world, through its relationships with other broadcasters such as BBC, NHK, RTVE, Televisión America Latina, Televisa and Deutsche Welle.

It is currently available as:

  • Terrestrial mode: VHF channel 11 (Bogotá, analogue), UHF channel 16 (digital terrestrial, HDTV)
  • Satellite TV: DirecTV Colombia (dial 137), Telefónica Digital TV (153).
  • Cable TV: Telmex TV (dial 11 on basic TV) (dial 109 on Digital TV)
  • Over the air: Analogue TV (dials 1, 2, 5, 11; depending on location)

Canal Institucional[edit]

Canal Institucional broadcasts programs created by national institutions, with an emphasis on citizen participation and coverage of legislative activities. It boasts a national coverage of 93.7%.

It is currently available as:

  • Terrestrial mode: VHF channel 9 (Bogotá).
  • Satellite TV: DirecTV Colombia (dial 138), Telefónica Digital TV (152).
  • Cable TV: Telmex TV (dial 9 on basic TV) (dial 115 on Digital TV)
  • Over the air: Analogue TV (11)

Canal Uno[edit]

Canal Uno is a state-owned, privately run national channel, the only Colombian public-commercial channel (after Canal A folded and became Señal Institucional in late 2003), operated by the RTVC SMP. The channel schedule is largely filled by private production companies known as programadoras, federated since 2004 in time-sharing unions, though RTVC SMP programs 25% of Canal Uno's airtime.


Radio Nacional de Colombia[edit]

Founded in 1940 as Radiodifusora Nacional, Radio Nacional de Colombia broadcasts news information from state and institutional agencies in addition to a Colombian cultural sphere called "Colombiología". Its slogan is based on Colombian culture and vision itself "Colombiología al aire". Operating on both the AM and FM bands, it covers the 32 departmental capitals, including Bogota and some medium-sized municipalities.


Radiónica (created in 1995 as "99-1 Young Frequency" and rebranded under its current name in 2005) shares with audiences the diversity of cultural expressions and urban music in Colombia and abroad, establishing a direct dialogue with the world, involving the concept of Colombia as part of the universal and the universal as a dynamic element of the country, under the vision and voice of different generations. The musical program "Radionics" offers a variety of styles and trends identified by contemporary expressions: rock, jazz, blues, soul, funk, pop, punk, ska, reggae, metal, industrial, hip hop, world music and electronica. Radiónica is available on the FM band in 8 cities.
