Ravi Kumar Mehrotra (b. 12 May 1941 is an Indian entrepreneur from Kanpur. He is the chairman and founder of Foresight Group International, a global conglomerate with diversified interests including shipping, and offshore oil drilling.[2]

In 1979, Mehrotra was appointed Principal Advisor to the Islamic Republic of Iran for shipping. He resigned from Irano Hind in 1984 and on 4 September 1984, he founded his own company, Foresight Limited in London as a trading company.[3][4][5]

Foresight Offshore Drilling[edit]

In 1989, he established a drilling section of the company- Foresight drilling, Foresight Driller 2 – the drill ship and Foresight Driller 3 – the 300 feet ship. Foresight Drilling became the first in India to handle horizontal drilling for ONGC Corporation of India and worked with them from 1993-1997. He bought another rig in 1998- FD 5, bringing his total up to 3 rigs. As the years have gone by, the rig activities of the group have increased, allowing him to build 3 new jack-up rigs, which have all obtained contracts. He purchased VK1, VK2 in 2016, which are on contract with ONGC in Bombay High and the third rig VK3, which is on contract with ADNOC in Abu Dhabi. This brings up his total to 6 rigs. He has two other rigs which are on a bareboat charter.[6]

Fine Dining- The Tandoor[edit]

In 1992, he established the city’s first Indian restaurant in Shanghai on request from the Mayor of Shanghai. – The Tandoor, which opened with Jin Jiang Group in Shanghai in 1994. New Tandoor branches opened in Chengdu in 1999 and Beijing in 2002. The Tandoor opened a fourth branch in Guangzhou in July 2008.[7]

Manufacturing- GTFC[edit]

In 1999, he invested in a shoe component manufacturing company, GTFC in Puducherry, which he finally took over and it became a part of the Foresight portfolio. The Shoe Club Limited was formed in 2004 – international supply chain management business for European retailers and wholesalers, to source high-quality leather shoes from India and the whole of Asia.[8]

Branded Retail- Pavers England[edit]

In 2007 March, he formed Foresight Smart Ventures, a vertical focused on India’s tremendous growth opportunities. In 2008, he formed a joint venture with Catherine Paver (the chair lady of the company Pavers, second largest shoe retailer in UK) to enter the Indian market for retailing shoes.[9]

Cruise Shipping[edit]

December 2005, he pioneered the first five- star cruise liner for India, he bought and outfitted a luxury cruise liner- “M.V. ocean odyssey” and entered into the cruise sector. It was stopped in mid may due to lack of infrastructure on the ports.

Philanthropy[edit]

He set up a maritime training institute in Kanpur, his hometown, in the same house that his father had constructed and where his family lived when he was a young boy. He called it AMTA (Amer Maritime Training Academy) in memory of his beloved mother. Under the registered charity of Amer Ship Owners and Rig Owners Association, the Academy was approved in 2002 by the directorate general of shipping of the Government of India. AMTA attained the approval to conduct Standards of training, Certification and watch-keeping ’95, modular courses- elementary first aid, personal survival techniques, fire prevention, firefighting, personal safety. Maritime English course was also started in 2003. The graduates were guaranteed placement on foresight vessels to learn how to be part of a crew of multiple nationalities. In 2010, an oil rig familiarization course began. In 2010, IADC from Huston, United States recognized the Institute for conducting oil rig crew training.[10][11]

  • Lifetime Achievement Award at Seatrade 30th Anniversary Awards Event (2018)[14]
  • Dr Ravi Kumar Mehrotra and Foresight Group International were 99th in the top 100 Lloyd's List in 2012[15]
