Santiago Abascal Conde (born 14 April 1976) is a Spanish sociologist and conservative politician, who has been the leader of Vox since September 2014. He is a former member of the Basque Parliament.

Early life and education

Abascal was born in Bilbao. He went on to study sociology at the University of Deusto, completing the degree in 2003.

Political career

Abascal first served in the Basque Parliament from January 2004 to February 2005 representing Álava. He later served again in the parliament from October 2005 to January 2009.

Iniatially a member of the Partido Popular since 1994 Abascal later helped to found a new right-wing party. Subsequently he was elected as the president of Vox in September 2014.[1]
