"Shadow Dancing" is an episode from the third season of the science fiction television series Babylon 5.

Synopsis[edit]

Sheridan and Delenn have determined that the Shadows are attempting to force refugee ships to a specific sector in space as to wipe them out in one swift attack. To preempt this, Sheridan wants to lead an assault on a nearby sector to attack the Shadows first. Delenn works to secure as many ships from the non-aligned worlds to help, each with telepaths aboard to help slow down the Shadows, while Ivanova and Marcus volunteer to be a scouting mission aboard the White Star to alert the rest of the fleet when the Shadows arrive. The White Star arrives and hides in the shadow of a moon. Marcus detects a Shadow scout ship, too late for them to take action to keep their cover, and soon more Shadow vessels arrive. The rest of the fleet jumps in, and a large battle takes place. After losing some of their ships, the Shadows soon depart. Sheridan considers it a satisfactory battle, but knows that now the Shadows will turn their attention to Babylon 5.

Meanwhile, on the state, Franklin is continuing his walkabout. He overhears a fight nearby and tries to intercede, but one of the attackers stabs him with a knife. Alone, Franklin struggles to reach help while losing blood. He eventually has a vision of himself, snidely commenting on the situation he has found himself him. Resolved to prove this wrong, Franklin manages to get into a crowded marketplace, where security quickly rushes him to medlab. Franklin is able to make a recovery, and when Sheridan returns back from the attack, Franklin tells him that he wants his position back since the walkabout helped him realize that the stims he took didn't help him to be a better doctor.

Delenn tells Sheridan that she would like to perform a Minbari mating ritual with Sheridan, in which the female keeps watch over the male as he sleeps over three nights, believing the true face of the male will come out during that. Sheridan agrees, and after their return to the station, start the ritual. As Delenn keeps watch, a figure enters Sheridan's quarters, and introduces herself as Anna, Sheridan's wife, shocking Delenn.

Arc significance[edit]

  • The alliance has its first victory against the Shadows.
  • Dr. Franklin is attacked and nearly dies, ending his "walkabout".
  • Anna Sheridan returns from Z'ha'dum.
  • The scene where Anna Sheridan enters Sheridan's quarters was foreseen by Delenn in "War Without End".

Production details[edit]

  • The name of one of the Minbari cruisers, Enfili, is also the name of a race in the League of non-aligned worlds which is antagonized by Raiders during season 5 ("Paragon of Animals").
  • The White Star collided with a Shadow scout ship and emerged damaged but intact. It is unknown if she was able to fire a quick burst before being rammed or the sheer force of the impact alone resulted in the Shadow ship's destruction. Either way, it shows that the White Star ships are very durable and can heal very quickly.
  • According to the canonical Technomage trilogy books, the Technomage Alwyn participated in this battle by disguising his ship as a Narn Fighter. Also, Sheridan was able to discern the pattern of Shadow attacks because of the Technomage Galen.
