He was the inaugural Director of the Israeli Department of Antiquities, holding the position from the foundation of the Department on July 26, 1948, until 1961.
- In 1955, Yeivin was the joint recipient (together with Michael Avi-Yonah) of the Bialik Prize for Jewish thought.
- In 1968, Yeivin was awarded the Israel Prize, for Jewish studies.
