A special administrative region, or SAR is a type of sub-national government. The following countries have adopted this form of administrative unit:

People's Republic of China
  • Special administrative region, a territory provided by Article 31 of the PRC Constitution and "local administrative region" as defined by Article 12 of the basic law of the special administrative region. The two current special administrative regions are Hong Kong (established in 1997) and Macau (established in 1999)
