is it correct[edit]

that the minium frame size was increased to allow collision detection to be maintained? Plugwash 23:26, 6 November 2005 (UTC)

Not for fast ethernet - they got round the problem by reducing the maximum network diameter. In original ethernet there was the 5-4-3-2-1 rule (max 5 segments, max 4 repeaters, max 3 segments with hosts, 2 segments without hosts, for 1 single collision domain.) i.e. max network diameter of 2500 m. In fast ethernet you are only allowed a maximum of two repeaters (hubs) or only a single repeater if it is of a higher-latency type (type I /class I / can't remember the exact terminology). i.e. max diamater of 300 m. But it WAS increased IIRC for gigabit ethernet. 14:17, 13 November 2005 (UTC)
