" En route to the final, Spain defeated Romania, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland over a two-legged ties before beating Hungary in the semi-final" - mismatch in the latter part here in "a two-legged ties". "a" is in the singular, while "ties" is in the plural
"Spain lost to Portugal in the third-place play-off" - based on the body, it looks like it should be that the Soviet Union lost to Portugal in the third-place playoff
I don't think I was clear enough. The lead says Spain lost to Portugal in the third-place play-off. while referring to the 1966 World Cup, while the body says The Soviet Union beat North Korea, Italy and Chile in their group stage. After defeating Hungary, they lost to West Germany in the semi-final and were defeated by Portugal in the third-place play-off. Unless I'm missing something, this is looking contradictory. Why did the Soviet Union receive a first-round bye? Prior performance, or was it just a random scheduling draw?

In the table for the Soviet Union, it says that the 1-1 tie was the game in Moscow, while the 3-1 game was the one in Stockholm, while the prose body gives the opposite locations
