Definition of "1 E24 m²" would be nice.

"is this clearer, Anon?" -- To be honest, no, not really. I'm visualizing somebody who's not familar with the Exx m² convention (or even exponents in general) trying to figure out what the page title has to do with the contents. I think really we need a general article on this notation that all these articles could link to. Thanks for you consideration of this issue.

OK. I'm trying to avoid agreeing to peppering every scientific article with explanatory notes, but how about a footnote saying "See scientific notation for an explanation of the notation used in 1E24m² and 1024."? N.B. If you say "yes", I don't promise to change the whole of Wiipedia, but at least I might use the idea in my own articles. --user:Heron

The top of Orders of magnitude explains it. I like the "areas of the order of 1024 square metres" bit. I keep meaning to make a template for the OofM chain articles... -- Tarquin 22:45 Nov 1, 2002 (UTC)
Well, I looked in Orders of magnitude before I posted on this and I didn't see an explanation then, and I still don't. If it's there I can't find it. As I said, I think it would be fine if all of these "order of magnitude" pages had a note saying "see article for explanation of the meaning of Exx m²", but that article has to actually have the explanation in such a fashion that the naive user can find and understand it. (I hope I'm not coming across as opposing what you're doing here - far from it. I'm just trying to increase its accessability.)
The scientific notation page does explain both the 1024 and the 1E24 notation, though. --Heron

Since these chain pages naturally have links to Orders of magnitude, let's put a brief explanation of the notation at the top of that page. I'd rather not have a clumsy "see xx for an explanation". -- Tarquin
