Veterans Committee[edit]

I was wondering if we should perhaps list some notable candidates who will be eligible for the first time (ie, were not eligible in 2011)? Of course, the problem would be in establishing what makes a 'notable candidate'... Masternachos (talk) 01:18, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It's not so hard[edit]

If the BBWAA voters shun the usual suspects again this year, it will not be necessary to carry over that Jim Caple quote again. The case will be closed. And the voters can clear the list in advance of the next few years of top-shelf eligibles by narrowing their field. You can expect that Maddux and Thomas might be first-ballot entries. Biggio and Morris could get up, especially it being Morris' last year. Vote for Piazza, Martinez and Schilling. That's 7 votes out of 10, gets 7 deserving guys into the Hall, and the wide spread of the other 3 votes will ensure that quite a few fall out under 5%. Then you can have Randy and Pedro join the next year, Griffey and Hoffman the year after, and so on without the ballot being cluttered. Just have to have a solid consensus this year and every little thing's gonna be alright. Darcyj (talk) 04:53, 21 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The BBWAA has elected 17 players since then (including Larkin), in just 7 years. That's a remarkable rate. And upcoming ballots are incredibly weak: Next year is Derek Jeter and... Bobby Abreu? And 2021's best new candidate is probably Mark Buehrle. Aside from Kenny Lofton getting a raw deal for being part of a super class of new eligibles, voting has gone pretty well and basically sorted itself out. 147.226.215.115 (talk) 05:12, 28 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Why does the 2014 chart have †'s next to players names to denote players who are on the ballot for the first time? The right hand column [of the left table] clearly indicates whether this is the players 1st, 2d, 3d, etc... time on the ballot. This seems redundant. The date of the 2014 induction is included. I hope it stays once the date passes. Can someone add the induction date on prior years? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:B:BE80:D:60D5:5F84:ABB:ECCA (talk) 11:56, 26 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Briefly, the last column in the left table is a novelty. Indeed, the right table Key {{BBWAA balloting key}} is a novelty. The dagger is old and long in use throughout that part of the series where it obviously makes sense--from Baseball Hall of Fame balloting, 1958.
