4D BIM is a generic industry term, not a company product, which refers to a technology revolution sweeping the construction industry on a global basis.

In the recent past, many builders of complex, indeed, epic construction projects, have not been able to harness the power of software to help them build optimally. They have been reliant on the use of traditional project management techniques with limited and out-dated methods of depicting an understandable explanation of the project approach; these limitations are not limited to one level of the story or another it is a problem whether the explanation is at a strategic level or detailed tactical level.

4D BIM no longer relies on on the traditional Gantt chart as the sole method of articulating a project approach but now utilises the actual 3D CAD model in combination with additional 3D construction engineering model elemets to plan, schedule, and explore the complex project delivery approach. The 4D BIM is able to create a virtual construction project environment in the computer by utilising the visual power of the 3D design and construction model elements along with the traditional well established CPM techniques of the project management, but does not suffer the limitations of Gantt chart to create the approach, involve others in the process of refining the approach or just to tell the story. So if you are responsible to deliver a project of any consequence or risk such as a bridge structure, mining operations or a tall building, say, the Shard at London Bridge Quarter, then anyone connected to the project; the owner, the hospital operations neighbor, the main line rail station manager, the substructure subcontractor or host and lift supplier to this project can quickly and easily see and understand the project delivery approach in accurate detailed images backed by the proven traditional project management science of the critical planning analysis. All participants are now for the first time equally informed and armed to fully participate in the understanding, development and tracking of the progress of the project from the outset to the moment the project is turned over to full operational use.

Hence, the architects, owners, contractors, suppliers of building materials, financiers, insurance underwriters, regulators -- every stakeholder can see the project come together on a computer screen, day-by-day, and understand what is being proposed, agreed and performed until the project comes to a close; all project stakeholders especially the construction engineers can work collaboratively to find the most optimal project delivery approach, with minimum risk, at the lowest cost, and manage the results to an on-time and on-budget objective.

4D BIM is a revolutionary construction tool that fully harnesses software to help efficiently build with a collective single minded vision of the project in four dimensions.

Many industry leading construction companies in every major economic market on the globe are using 4D BIM from isolated construction engineering problems to multi-billion dollar new city developments to help them build safely, efficiently and on-target.

The capabilities of 4D BIM to visualize construction projects and anticipate problems in advance of encountering them in reality out on the construction project site is at the essence of project management responsibilities. Communication is enhanced among the entire team. Ideas can be shared and alternative approaches can be explored before time is a critical factor limiting and stifling ideas. With all due respect, the above reads like advertising copy. Articles at wikipedia must be written from a Neutral point of view, and they must be back by multiple reliable sources. Not only that, but now there is an unashamed plug for one company at the end - Synchro - presumably the original contributor. This topic is important for the construction industry and deserves better than this (although I appreciate the time taken to put this in... provided it hasn't just been copied from Synchro's website).
