Designation[edit]

I believe the 'XAZ-1' designation used in the text of the article is erronious. Primarily because 'XAZ' would be exceedngly redundant. The 'AZ' designation, in the Army's designation system of the time, was 'Aircraft, Experimental' 'XAZ' would have been 'Experimental Aircraft Experimental'. - The Bushranger Return fireFlank speed 06:55, 9 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Harding, Stephen (1997). U.S. Army Aircraft Since 1947. Atglen, PA, USA: Schiffer Publishing Ltd. pp. 188–9. ISBN 96-69996. {{cite book}}: Check |isbn= value: length (help)
The above source does call it the XAZ-1, and gives the Army serial number, but doesn't say it is or isn't an Army designation. on page 262 of the Harding book, it lists the type designations of the US Army's 1956-62 system: AC, AO, AU, HC, HO, HU, and VZ. Given that the XAZ-1 is mentioned in the book, it's odd that he didn't list "XAZ" or "AZ" as being part opf the system. While it looks liek this needs more investigation to be cedrtian, we should probably move the page Mississippi State University XAZ-1 Marvelette. - BilCat (talk) 08:22, 9 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hm, that's odd, because I've in the past seen AZ listed as part of the system (in line with VZ, and HZ). But a quick Google Books check shows no hits for "AZ-1 Marvelette", and four for "XAZ-1 Marvelette". I guess the Army's Department of Redundancy Department made up that part of the designation system! - The Bushranger Return fireFlank speed 08:28, 9 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
