Proposal to move[edit]

I moved the abovementioned article to Abdur Rehman (cricketer), and this move was reverted by you. I think my move was appropriate since the Abdur Rehman in question has received more coverage in the mainstream media than the others. However, if you disagree with what I have stated here, please let me know. Thanks. Telco (talk) 19:13, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

My reason for reversion was that there are fully seven other cricketers called Abdur Rehman, namely
It may well be that some of these are pretty obscure, but they have wikipedia articles, so we must assume that some people are going to want to read those articles. If not, some or all of these should be listed at WP:AfD. If that were done and all seven were removed, it would be entirely right to remove the "1980" from the one that was left.
But the only reason that has been given is that the 1980-born cricketer has "received more coverage in the mainstream media than the others", which may be biased by the fact that he is the most recent, and maybe earlier mainstream media might show a different picture. In any case this isn't sufficient reason to create a situation where a general reader would not be aware that the articles on the others existed. Whatever we do there needs to be a page Abdur Rehman (cricketer) (disambiguation), which one of us can create in the near futire after this argument is sorted out. I see your point. I have reverted some of my recent edits which redirected links from Abdur Rehman (cricketer, born 1980) to Abdur Rehman (cricketer). Telco (talk) 22:35, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've now created the disambiguation page, but I do understand telco's worries here and I feel uneasy about the way things are at present, for several reasons
  • "Abdur Rehman" isn't a given name and surname, as I suspect may be supposed; it's a single given name, as explained in the Abdur Rahman article. I'm pretty sure that all these cricketers will have one or more further names, and in fact further names are given for the born-1934 and born-1955 men. Possibly it would be a good idea to move those two articles to titles corresponding to the full names given.
  • For all except the born-1980 man, the sole reference is the cricket archive and there is a near-negligible number of inward links.
  • Five of the eight are stated to have been born on the first of the month. This is either an amazing coincidence or a way of representing the fact that for them the precise birthday is not known.
I'm not well up on the notability criteria for cricketers, but it does seem that some of these articles might well be deleted. SamuelTheGhost (talk) 00:15, 2 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 17 February 2024[edit]

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: moved. Consensus is that the current title is a PDAB that needs to be fully disambiguated. (non-admin closure)  Bait30  Talk 2 me pls? 20:50, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Abdur Rehman (cricketer)Abdur Rehman (cricketer, born 1980) – Disambiguate from other cricketers of same name. * Pppery * it has begun... 20:13, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support the 1980 one has 394 views but the others have 33[[1]] which probably isn't enough for a PDAB. Crouch, Swale (talk) 20:31, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose The current subject is the only one who has a had a major career, playing for Pakistan internationally, whereas two of the others are only redirects now, and the other only had a very minor domestic career playing in only 10 games (this one could potentially be a redirect also under the updated WP:NSPORTS and WP:NCRIC guidelines). He is clearly the most notable cricketer here. Rugbyfan22 (talk) 10:45, 18 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per nomination and Crouch, Swale. Abdur Rehman (cricketer) is incomplete disambiguation and should redirect to the Abdur Rahman (disambiguation)#Abdur Rehman page. —Roman Spinner (talkcontribs) 23:47, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per nom. Very obvious incomplete disambiguation. -- Necrothesp (talk) 14:50, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Post-move note: the current title is still theoretically ambiguous with Abdul Rehman (Kenyan cricketer). I don't particularly like disambiguating based on small details in this way since both are variants of the same name Abd al-Rahman, but there's no better solution. Even "Abdur Rehman (Pakistani cricketer, born 1980)" doesn't solve the problem since the Kenyan cricketer was born in Pakistan so could reasonably be called Pakistani. "Abdur Rehman (cricketer, born March 1980)" would work, and is used in a few other common names (i.e Charles Smith (basketball, born August 1975)) but is not really helpful since nobody will remember the month he was born. I don't plan to take any further action here since the current situation is probably least worst, but am leaving this as a note for the future. Wikipedia disambiguation becomes a pain when too many people have the same or very similar names. * Pppery * it has begun... 23:02, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
