Title[edit]

I wonder whether the recent move is in line with Wikipedia naming conventions. Although "Park Lands" is the official name, it is very rarely used. "Parklands" is the predominant spelling in all respects aside those official. Google confirms this to be the case online at least, with "Park Lands" grossing less than 35,000 hits compared to more than 300,000 for "Parklands". --cj | talk 07:22, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

I agree the word is parklands. But this article isn't about the generic, it's about the specific; titled for the name of the subject not the word used to commonly describe the subject. I mean this is an article with a proper noun title. — User:Donama 08:44, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

"parklands" is being corrected to Park Lands on the Adelaide Park Lands wikipedia entry because "parklands" is erroneous. "parklands" or "Parklands" may be commonly used but it is incorrect usage when referring to the City of Adelaide's figure-eight of open space, the Adelaide Park Lands. Just because the fact that so many are ignorant and get it wrong is flagged by Google stats is no reason for Wikipedia to be deliberately incorrect. The Adelaide Park Lands is a proper place name. It entered the generic term "parklands" into the English language which previously had parks, liberty lands, commons etc but no parklands. Other places have generic parklands, but Adelaide has the first and these are correctly the "Adelaide Park Lands". — Preceding unsigned comment added by Zbunyip (talkcontribs) 12:41, 19 August 2017 (UTC)

Parklands today[edit]

"Recent developments in the parklands have focused on maintenance and upgrading of recreational facilities, particularly through the Greening of Adelaide tree planting and replacement programs" is a fatuous statement.

The Corporation of the Cty of Adelaide has actively worked to make the upgrading of recreational facilities as difficult as possible. Long term leases for playing fields and land for buildings (changing rooms and clubs houses) have been reduced from 20 years and upwards to 1 year permits of use[1]. Additions and extensions to these rooms are not approved. Club houses and storage facilites have been demolished and returned to a scrub setting.[2] The city council's tree planting programmes have been aimed at reducing the amount of green space available for playing fields [3]. Recent plans have shown a great reduction in the size and scope of the playing fields in the parklands.

[1] Adelaide University playing fields and buildings. 1 year permit of use, depsite repeated requests to gain longer term leases as in the past. 1 year permits in place for other users.
[2] Fitzroy croquet club. Building and playing fields destroyed despite requests from various groups to use the club house and fields.
[3] 2006 plans for Park 10 and surrounds (Adelaide Uni playing fields). Tree planting to severely reduce the size of playing fields.

"The Greening of Adelaide tree planting and replacement programs" are themselves destructive and damaging development of the Park Lands. Replacing remnant biodiversity with plantations, destroying micro-climates essential for the survival of remnant species and damaging soil profiles and introducing weed species are just a few of the raft of destructive aspects of the tree-planting vandalism perpetrated in the Adelaide Park Lands. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Zbunyip (talkcontribs) 12:44, 19 August 2017 (UTC)

Parklands maintenance[edit]

The greatest percentage of parklands is maintained by the various permit holders. This includes the University of Adelaide, Prince Alfred College, Christian Brothers College, Touch SA (City Touch) etc. In comparison the city council only maintains a small percentage of the parklands.

"Settlement" vs "White settlement"[edit]

"White settlement" is quite a politically loaded term IMO, as it has overtones of racial division and the so-called "black armband" view of history and all the rest of it. Dictionary.com's entry on "settlement" is ambiguous - It defines it as the "colonisation" or "settling" of new people in a new land. Therefore it seems that there could possibly have been a stone-age "black settlement" 40,000 years ago, and a steam-age "white settlement" 174 years ago. It's still colonisation, whether you came in canoes or clippers. May I suggest a compromise of "european settlement" or "British settlement", such as is widely used in other articles of South Australian geographic locations?--Yeti Hunter (talk) 02:03, 4 May 2010 (UTC)

Fair enough. I don't mean to make an issue out of this and if we use the word settlement am happy to precede it with "British". On reflection though I don't think the intro of this History section needs to mention the settlement of Adelaide. The point is that Adelaide is a planned city and the parklands were a part of the plan when it was done in 1837 (though I haven't been able to verify that date yet). Adelaide Park Lands for FA[edit]

Having this page appear on my watchlist a few times in the last few days has highlighted that it's in a pretty poor state. This article is a potential FA. Let's get it there. Suggested article headings for a complete rewrite:

  • Lead - Current lead is mostly ok. Remove POV wording (eg "alienated"). Include infobox? eg Central Park? Anybody have a free-use aerial photograph of whole parkands for lead photo?
  • History - Light's vision, early development. History of attitudes? Possibly include former institutions such as bus depot, SAJC, Adelaide Gaol, police
  • Parklands today - intro about being place of recreation for Adeladeans, perhaps mention "National Heritage" status
    • Layout - overview of major parks (link to park articles), Park "numbers" and Kaurna "dual naming", description of major precincts of development
    • Cultural Boulevard (ie North Terrace institutions) - SLSA, Museum, Art gallery, unis, Parliament, Gov. House, Botanic Gdns, Wine ctr.
    • River Precinct - Torrens lake, Festival Centre and Plaza, rowing clubs, former Hyatt, casino, Adelaide Gaol, zoo
    • Sports - Various sporting clubs and activities, race track, Aquatic Ctr, Golf links, Adelaide Oval, Mem. Drive, bowls club, hockey club, horse agistment, school sporting grounds (Wildy, CBC, AHS, Adelaide Uni... any others?)
    • Major Events - Bonython Park festivals, Garden of Unearthly Delights, WOMAD, Clipsal, horse trials, etc. Maybe merge into appropriate section above?
    • Utilities - railyards, RAH, SA water, Keswick rail terminal (is this technically in parkland?? sources.)
    • Transport - major roads, rail link (freight and commuter), tram, MATS plan
    • Other - Adelaide High, West Tce cemetery, restaurants
  • Management - ACC, sports clubs and other stakeholders, State Gov takeover/controversy, land management practices / revegetation, Glenelg-Parklands pipeline (to augment torrens water for irrigation)
  • Parklands Preservation Movement - about how parklands are fiercely protected by some, and development is resisted. World Heritage nomination campaign. Conflicts with developers. Various schools of thought (eg, No buildings vs limited development vs major development perspectives). Try to keep this section about the movement itself and not the controversies.
  • Recent developments - (not too sure about this one - POV magnet?) New RAH, state government takeover, withdrawal of SAJC?

Comments? Any suggested additions / things which shouldn't be there? Different structures? Perhaps instead of "Cultural Boulevard" and "river precinct" have a "Cultural institutions" section and mention the Cultural Boulevard there? --Yeti Hunter (talk) 01:25, 5 May 2010 (UTC)

In true apathetic Australian style, I'll enthusiastically say: "Looks good!", and then retreat into back into anonymity. Pdfpdf (talk) 13:20, 5 May 2010 (UTC)
More usefully, I'll say "Looks good", and, "Although I'm very interested in the welfare of the article, I'm afraid it's not on my list of priorities at the moment."
Nevertheless, I'll be keeping an eye on it via my watchlist, and can assure you that I'll complain loudly if something contrary to my POV occurs.
Best wishes for a successful outcome. Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 13:20, 5 May 2010 (UTC)

Parks 7 and 8[edit]

As per recent edit by Oosh which was rather harshly slammed, I also think the sections for park 7 and 8 *should* be merged into one, given all the information is for both. There was no reason or justification given for separating them when this was done. I don't care if this makes the redirects less pretty. Surely the most readable arrangement is for duplicate information to be merged into one section where possible. To the best of my knowledge there's no strong distinguisher between these two parks. They can always be discussed together. Donama (talk) 00:16, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
