Celtic Albiones[edit]

For the IP editor who made the recent changes:

The name Albiones occurs in Book 4 of Pliny’s Natural History in this section on NW Spain

111 civitatium novem regio Cantabrorum. flumen Sauga. portus Victoriae Iuliobrigensium; ab eo loco fontes Hiberi XL p. portus Blendium. Orgenomesci e Cantabris; portus eorum Veseiasueca. regio Asturum, Noega oppidum. in paeninsula Paesici et deinde conventus Lucensis a flumine Navia Albiones, Cibarci, Egi, Varri cognomine Namarini, Adovi, Arroni, Arrotrebae. promunturium Celticum, amnes Florius, Nelo. Celtici cognomine Neri et super Tamarci, quorum in paeninsula tres arae Sestianae Augusto dicatae, Copori, oppidum Noeta, Celtici cognomine Praestamarci, Cileni. ex insulis nominandae Corticata et Aunios.

Also the Vegadeo inscription doesn’t look late or Post-Roman at all, so several centuries before the Early Christian Britones of the same region. As a name for Britons and Albion for Britain this was already obsolete by Pliny’s time (he says so) so it would be odd to use it that way in the Early Middle Ages. Also using an inverted C for Castello is a feature inscriptions of the early Roman Period not Early Medieval. Albiones is usually understood as both a group name current in pre-Roman and an early (probably the earliest surviving) name for the inhabitants of Britain, rather than alternatively one or the other. However, that the Britones are in the same place is interesting and probably not a coincidence and a useful contribution you have made to this page.

In the inscription CLVTOSI and CARIACA also look like Celtic names. I have never (before) seen a suggestion that that inscription could be as late as the 6th or 7th century AD.Jembana (talk) 00:59, 7 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Albion and Albiones[edit]

Obviously there must be a connection between Great Britain's old name and this toponym. Could someone do something with that? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 140.147.236.194 (talk) 19:19, 6 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
