Hi Colts and Colt fans! I am in the process of editing the articles for all Arlington-area high schools. I propose to update the title of this article to "Arlington High School (Arlington, Texas)". All that is being changed is adding the city in the article title to make the title consistent with the other Arlington-area schools. Please discuss here if think this update will present a problem. --Krivak957 (talk) 13:53, 13 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Artice title should be the name the school is commonly referred to in literature. See WP:COMMONNAME. That would be "Arlington High School", clearly. However, there are other US high schools with that name. They are listed at Arlington High School. Per WP:DAB, we use the least number of words that will completely disambuguate the title. Hence, (Texas) is the correct disambiguation. It's quite possible the other articles are improperly titled. I'll look at that. A list of them would be helpful. Uniformity for the local area is not a factor in titling articles. John from Idegon (talk) 17:07, 13 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, John from Idegon. There are so many WP policies it's often difficult for newcomer to find the most applicable one. Based on your example, then we would keep the title Seguin High School (Arlington, Texas) "as is" because there is also another Seguin High School (Seguin, Texas) in Texas. So in that case we need the city for DAB. But in the case of Arlington High School (Texas), you don't need the city name because there are no other Arlington High Schools in Texas. Do I have that right? Here is the list of schools I'm working on:
Your assistance is appreciated. --Krivak957 (talk) 18:11, 13 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, that's exactly right. I haven't verified the others, but I'd guess they are correct as they either have a very common name (Martin) or they are figures from Texas history who logically would have schools named after them statewide. I think this conversation is likely completed, but there are some other things I want to talk to you about which I'll raise on your talkpage. Thanks for your interest in schools (I'm the US coordinator for Wikiproject Schools) and thanks for becoming a Wikipedian. It can be intimidating but I see you're an engineer from your userpage. It's a fairly logical system we have here, once you make the connection that it's managed "bottom up" rather than "top down" like most business endeavors. If I can help with anything regarding schools, settlements or technical issues, feel free to message me on my talk anytime. John from Idegon (talk) 18:33, 13 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Folks, the rule is pretty simple:
  1. If the high school name is unique, no disambiguation.
  2. If there are multiple high schools with the same name, but only one with that name in a given state, then the disambiguator is "(Statename)".
  3. If there are multiple high schools with the same name in a given state, then the disambiguator is "(Cityname, Statename)"
There is only one Arlington High School in Texas, so the title should be Arlington High School (Texas), as it is.
Regarding the others:
Looks like everything is fine to me. --В²C 04:02, 14 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the help, John from Idegon and В²C. I'll leave the names "as is." This conversation is complete. --Krivak957 (talk) 16:07, 14 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
