Free-to-play vs. Pay-for-perks[edit]

There is some debate about whether BatMUD should be classified as a Free or a Pay-for-perks game. Most games that are considered Pay-for-perks are actively selling in-game benefits, whereas the position of BatMUD is to not accept money from the players, except in rare occasions when investments such as new hardware is needed. It is therefor in my view, fair to say that most of the time the game is free to play and that it is not possible to achieve perks for money. Nhl 19:16, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It is always free to play, but if you have invested a thousand dollars or so into it you have a thousand or so task points which allows you to have a greatly superior character. A character without task points is sufficient for enjoyable game play.Fred Bauder 21:34, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I don't believe donations are open now, but they are open every couple of years. Regular players have had several opportunities to donate. See http://www.bat.org/help/help.php?htype=extra&str=donate apparently substantial donations can be made now. Substantial is probably a few hundred Euros or more. I don't make an exception for fundraisers, though. So long as it's a semi-regular fundraising activity, I consider the MUD to be pay-for-perks. And, because, apparently, they are open to donations (even if it is only large ones) right now, it's not even a sporadic occasional thing. I mean, Achaea only accepts a certain base level of money, ($15 if I remember correctly) - it isn't just any random amount, and Achaea is a pretty canonical PFP model. Yep, the topic of free versus pay-for-perks is tricky, as can be witnessed by the numerous debates in the MUD community. My own view is that there is a difference between a game that is actively selling in-game benefits and a game which only accepts money when needed to sustain the game, which in the case of BatMUD has been roughly every third or fourth year or so, when there has been need for hardware upgrades. I will not engage in a revert war about this, but I do not personally feel that the pay-for-perks model is prominent, especially not prominent enough to warrant its inclusion in the introductory paragraph, given that it is mentioned in the History and developments ection, especially for a game which is not currently accepting such transactions. Paying isn't the only way of gaining these perks... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.64.14.2 (talk) 07:41, 20 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect link?[edit]

Should the link to Wizard in the History and Development section actually link to Wizard (software)? - Heavens To Betsy 19:00, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Forget it, I found the answer. A wizard is a name given to some of the building staff in a MUD. Cheers. - Heavens To Betsy 19:36, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Establishing Notability[edit]

I added some sentences on BatMUDs notability in the history section. As the game is seen as one of the MUD pioneers with several published reviews, tagging the article for non-notability would mean that virtually no other MUDs would be considerer notable either. On an unrelated point, the "Game Client" section reads a bit too much like an advertisment and should probably be cleaned up — Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.100.124.219 (talk) 07:58, 20 July 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Removal of unsourced material[edit]

I have removed most material that does not have a source in a reliable third party publication. Practically speaking, in this case, that is the mudconnector page on BatMUD. Fred Talk 03:02, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

First of all, the game dates back to year 1990. I am sure you undestand how little there was electronic or even paper articles about games in the start of '90s, in age of BBSes. I can undestand the citation ugre, but BatMUD is ancient in game/internet sense. There simply is not much to dig up if the T-Rex was born 65 M.years ago, except this one still keeps going on. Earliest paper cication from the game is back -93 from game magazine called Pelit and even they don't have the electronic version of it. At the moment, best citations are the ingame news system and B.A.T. Ry's anyal records plus anything that people simply remember. Secondly, you have also removed lot of content that does have sources. Thirdly, like WoW and other comercial games, citations about the history/changes/ingame content are realible when made from the content offerer as they alone have intrests to keep track of them. Or do you plan to go remove the subscribers part from e.g. WoW article too? I plan to revert your blanking as its doing more harm than good. 77.234.102.33 (talk) 00:31, 29 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Please do, I'll dig up news groups archives to find sources from early '90s Kimvais (talk) 08:53, 29 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
