Unsupported claims[edit]

There are some unsupported and highly dubious claims throughout this article. For example, in the Climate section, "The level of oxygen in the air of the Azov seacoast is half as much again as in the air of the Black seacoast." It looks to me like some local cheerleader is attempting to write a tourist brochure. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.238.144.218 (talk) 23:59, 18 September 2011 (UTC) No kidding, that is absolutely false if what is meant by 'oxygen' is O2. Is it possible this is instead a measure of total oxygen content as a bizarrely indirect reference to local humidity (ie including oxygen from H2O as water vapor in the air)? Either way, w/o a supporting citation, that 'factoid' has to be removed. And so momentarily it will be done.24.130.81.47 (talk) 07:11, 13 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Retelling the global history in location articles[edit]

Re "The city was occupied by German forces during World War II."

So? An entire western part of the USSR was too and there is an Eastern Front (World War II) for that.

There is a trend in WP to contanimate the locations articles with retelling the country histories. Look, for instance Kamianets-Podilskyi and its Talk:Kamianets-Podilskyi#Ruthenia/Rus' and on trying to retell longs stories in two sentences, as well as many other articles. Trying to retell the centuries in half a paragraph is useless. We should consentrate on the events withing the global movements more connected to the history of locations. The town of Uman was part of whatever country that controlled the territory but the WW2 Battle of Uman was noteworthy, hence mentioned. Here this phrase brings nothin but clutter IMO. Could we delete it? --Irpen 22:36, August 13, 2005 (UTC)

Of course we should. --Ghirlandajo 23:26, 13 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Please read at comment at other issues at K.-P. talk referenced above. Thanks! :) --Irpen 23:46, August 13, 2005 (UTC)

Hystory: a city or a town?[edit]

Re: Its present name was given to the city in 1842

I am not sure Berdyansk is a city now (its population is about 120,000 - 130,000). In 1842 it was certainly a town. --Nazar Saman (talk) 09:36, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Leader's name[edit]

I clicked on Yevgen Shapovalov and found the article about Mr.Yevgeni Shapovalov who is the different person. --Nazar Saman (talk) 10:02, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Grammar[edit]

This article could use a bit of help grammatically, it's mostly readable and I can understand what the author meant, but some sentences are a bit hard to read. Considering the subject of this article, it was probably written by someone with English as a second language — so I put up the translation tag. I'm new to Wikipedia editing, so I'm not 100% sure if that's the correct tag to use, considering the article is pretty alright overall. If anyone with English as a first language feels like going through this article, it shouldn't take too long. Frip the bip! (talk) 00:23, 25 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

– This Ukrainian city’s name is not widely recognizable in the English-speaking world, and it has two common spellings. The standardized spelling better meets naming guidelines.

Looking at standards and references. This is Ukraine’s official Latin-alphabet spelling for the name, and as such is being adopted by other standard references, and it also corresponds to the widely used modified Library of Congress romanization. The BGN/PCGN GeoNames server gives Berdiansk as the approved spelling, Berdyansk one of the variants.[1] The Internet Encyclopedia of Ukraine uses Berdiansk.[2] Britannica gives “Berdyansk, also spelled Berdiansk.”[3] Google maps labels it Berdyans'k, Apple Maps Berdiansk. IATA calls the airport’s location Berdiansk.[4]

In other reliable sources:

Google Advanced Book Search (per WP:SET):

Google Scholar Search:

Add them all up with equal weight and you get 1 to 1.

From Google Books Ngram it looks like the spelling Berdyansk was most common from about 1950 to 2010, but Berdiansk much more common before, and a bit more common since.[5]

There isn’t a single unambiguous WP:COMMONNAME, but Berdiansk became the official Latin-alphabet spelling according to the Ukrainian romanization standard of 2010, and both WP:MODERNPLACENAME and WP:UKR indicate using this in lieu of a single most common name.

Berdiansk also fulfils the WP:CRITERIA for article titles as well or better. Recognizability: either is recognizable, but this spelling is expected by someone more familiar with the subject. Naturalness: more likely to be searched for if someone uses the official spelling or standard romanization. Precision: both are unambigious, this one more standard. Conciseness: equal. Consistency: this spelling is romanized by the same method as 99.99% of Wikipedia’s Ukrainian place name titles, and will be consistent with romanization of other words and names, e.g., the cognate geographic names Berdianska Bay and Berdianska Spit.  —Michael Z. 02:50, 12 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Source for protest videos[edit]

I posted an update containing the recent anti-Russian protests in Berdyansk where civilians were singing the national anthem and telling Russian soldiers to go home. However, despite Yahoo News claiming that the clip was indeed shared by The Independent, I couldn't find it anywhere on their site. If anyone could find the appropriate link and send it, it would be much appreciated. Adartho (talk) 19:08, 28 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
