Clergy??? Is Ms. St. John a member of the clergy? The Cumberland Presbyterian Church, as I understand it, has two classes of elders, "teaching elders" and "ruling elders." Teaching elders (ministers) are clergy, but ruling elders (responsible for running the local church) are laymen. A member of either class of elders can be elected Moderator of the General Assembly.
