Samuel Biddle[edit]

Does anyone know if Samuel Biddle, a partner in the Philadelphia jewelery firm Bailey, Banks & Biddle, is related to the Biddle family described here? See [1] for the connection. --DThomsen8 (talk) 17:36, 12 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That link is now dead, evidently after Finlay Enterprises went out of business. The Bailey Banks & Biddle still redirects there; not sure who runs it now, but there is a web site with a short about us page that makes it seem the company might be notable, e.g. for its work on historic seals and medals. this book says Samuel Biddle was born July 10, 1844 and died March 4, 1919 according to a family web site. Ancestors were William Biddle 1806–1887, and Elizabeth Garrett (1806–1881), then John Biddle (1763–1815) and then Owen Biddle, Sr. (1737–1799). W Nowicki (talk) 16:50, 16 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • David Biddle, (born 1958) Former Director of the Greater Philadelphia Commercial Recycling Council, Current Recycling Director for the City of Philadelphia.

The above list was just the ones without articles nor citations. That one has an article, but looking at it, nowhere in the article does it even mention any ties to the family. A few others do assert a connection, but I would say unless there is some evidence of a relation, just sharing a surname does not qualify the inclusion. There already is a Biddle disambig page for people sharing the name. So unless sources are found they should not be on this list, right? W Nowicki (talk) 19:52, 24 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

OK, looking at Owen Biddle (musician) I see two sources that say he is related, although both refer to Wikipedia! So not sure they can be classified as "reliable". However, one claims the author contacted his father and confirmed. So perhaps accept good faith and just say exact relation not known. That source also says that Jesse Biddle is 9th cousin, even though in the Jesse article it does not mention any ties to this family, and it is not in the category. One of the sources does say his father is David, presumably the one listed above as born in 1958?

Now Melvin E. Biddle article does not assert any connection to this line, and is not in the category. Not from Pennsylvania either.

Christopher Columbkille Biddle makes the assertion in the article and is in the Category, but without any source to back it up. I doubt that article would survive a notability challenge, since the only sources are company web sites and two press releases. Looks like just a vanity self-promotion page.

Peter Biddle asserts a connection and is in the category, but without any source.

John Biddle (yachting cinematographer) seems to given a connection. Will work on that. his article needs to be more encyclopedic instead of promotional, but seems notable.

I just started editing this today, so I don't know the history of the page. Right now it's the history of known descendents of the brothers William and John Biddle, who settled in Philadelphia, along with their notable descendents. It doesn't include everyone who happens to have the Biddle name because they're not necessarily related. My guess is that descendents of William and John, being so notable, have a well-known pedigree, and therefore constitute a family, as opposed to just sharing the same surname.
I converted the list into a pedigree because almost everybody on the list fit in the pedigree W Nowicki made. The ones I removed are listed in the section "Change list to pedigree" below. Tocharianne (talk) 00:34, 18 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well then either we need two pages.. One specifically on "descendants of the X & Y Biddle..." and another of "List of Biddles"... either that or perhaps totally transforming the page is not necessary. Rather than deletions perhaps a section could be called "Other notable Biddles". i.e. a list of Biddles who may or may not be related, but are notable. It is likely that at least _some_ of them are, such as the Philadelphians David Biddle & Jesse Biddle. (David didn't have a page, but I believe he has held a number of notable positions in his career(s).) Since this page is called Biddle Family, every one on it, by definition, must be related to each other. Compare this to Bush family which does not include anyone with the Bush name unless they're explicitly related. Other Biddles are already included in the Biddle page. This one doubtful, as you mention. Thomas Edward Biddle Sr. (1900–1944), veteran of the First World War, was awarded two purple hearts after being shot by a German sniper the day before and after his 19th birthday in the head. i have removed the name of nicholas biddle, born 1986. it linked to a disambiguation page with 2 n.b's, neither of them him. being an amateur boxer or graduate in architecture 3 years ago do not make one notable.i suspect someone thought this amusing.Toyokuni3 (talk) 15:03, 7 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
