HIV Infection Rates[edit]

a third of newly diagnosed individuals with HIV in the UK were MSM’s. The greatest numbers recorded since the start of the epidemic. MSM also account for 46% of all diagnoses since 1981.

So a third of newly diagnosed cases in men was the highest ever. Which means that the maximum diagnosed in any year is a third. So in all the years since 1981 the maxmum total is one third. But the article says it is 46%. Something is either wrong with the maths or the statement. I suppose it means that a greater number of people overall were diagnosed, and thus the third of them that were 'MSM' were a greater actual number than before, rather than a greater proportion than before, but the phrasing is dubious.JiMternet 09:36, 26 April 2007 (UTC) (sorry forgot to sign)[reply]

If you had bothered to quote all of the first sentance, rather than just the second part of it, it would have been clear: "According to the latest statistics (2005) from the Health Protection Agency a third of newly diagnosed individuals with HIV in the UK were MSM." In other words, a third of the single year of 2005's diagnoses, as opposed to 46% of the years 1981-2005's. Nick Cooper (talk) 16:33, 11 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pre-donation: "identify as homosexual" -- NPOV?[edit]

The pre-donation section talks about people who 'identify as homosexual' being ineligible to give blood. The issue isn't one of sexuality, more of past sexual acts -- there isn't a strict correlation (or implication in either direction). The subsequent talk of 'the gay scare' strikes me as emotive, particularly with no supporting reference. I'm putting a POV-section on this for the moment until I or someone else can come up with a better way of approaching the MSM issue (if indeed this is the right section to do it in). As said above, the rules do not say anything about being homosexual only "Men who have had anal or oral sex with another man, with or without a condom or other forms of protection". --Selbs101 (talk) 20:11, 28 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
