Merge[edit]

I agree that Bob Ferguson (baseball player) should be merged into Bob Ferguson (baseball). I wrote the former only because I didn't know that the latter existed.Carlo 03:02, 8 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nickname[edit]

I reverted a user explanation for Bob Ferguson's nickname ("because of his single career home run"). As far as I know, the reason for his nickname is unknown. A baseball blog named for him (http://www.deathtoflyingthings.blogspot.com/) says: "The origin of his unusual nickname remains a mystery, although most people believe it was because of his defensive prowess as an infielder. A more colorful explanation alleged that Ferguson liked to throw balls at birds prior to games."

He did have one career home run in the professional leagues. But 1) he was well-known well before that, and may well have hit more; 2) the home run was not the major deal it is today; 3) fans really didn't track statistics like they do now; and 4) most Home Runs were in the park, anyway. It sounds to me like as though the explanation for the nickname came from the statistic, not the actual nickname. Carlo 18:32, 24 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
