Untitled[edit]

Redlink "erosion channel" looks rather general, cannot find an appropriate existing article. Perhaps we should remove the reference or can someone provide a useful link?

Requested move 30 August 2017[edit]

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the move request was: Moved. No actual opposition, just a query, and the consistency does seem to be there, per  — Amakuru (talk) 12:41, 18 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Burgsvik bedsBurgsvik Beds – Consistent spelling with capital B for formation names Tisquesusa (talk) 21:49, 30 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Tisquesusa: Can you provide examples of articles that validate the claim to consistency? For some reason, I couldn't find any when I searched, but I may just be looking at the wrong articles. Steel1943 (talk) 19:41, 7 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It is common on Wikipedia to apply the widely used standard of <Name> <Formation> and not <Name> <formation>, see all the articles about geologic formations (I am creating new articles in that area, that's how I came to these requests) inside the respective categories, the lists, etc.
The Burgsvik Beds are different in that sense that they are not called "Burgsvik Formation", yet "Beds". But also, and that may well be leading, in the literature describing these beds (generic), the use of "Burgsvik Beds" (definitive) is common, see 1, 2 and 3. As with the Solnhofen limestone, which should be called Solnhofen Limestone, the capitalization of the second part of the name refers to a definitive formation, which in some cases is called "Beds", "Limestone", "Sandstone", etc. Like I mentioned in the case of Solnhofen, a name "Solnhofen limestone" refers to a limestone from Solnhofen, not the Solnhofen Limestone (Plattenkalk), that is the famous formation. Same as we have Utica Shale, for the well-known formation from New York, not Utica shale, which would refer to a shale from Utica.
This differentiation between generic (small letters) and definitive (capitalised) terms is universal on Wikipedia; we call it the Jurassic Coast in southern England, as a definitive name for that area, while "Jurassic coast" would be any coast that has Jurassic rocks (the Jura has no coasts). Same for Paris Basin for the definitive sedimentary basin around Paris, while "Paris basin" would be a (generic) basin in Paris. Common use on Wikipedia for geological and geographical features is capitalizing the second part in case it refers to a specific, definitive object; Long Island for the Long Island, while "Long island" would be an island that is long. Same for Yellow River, that refers to the Yellow River in China, not a river that appears as yellow. Same for East Coast of the United States, not East coast of the United States; any coast in the east of that country, Black Lake to refer to a lake with that specific name, while "Black lake" would be a lake having a (near-)black colour. Ayers Rock, not "Ayers rock" (which would be any rock of Ayer) etc., etc. Tisquesusa (talk) 20:15, 7 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The above discussion is preserved as an archive of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on this talk page or in a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.
