Cleanup wish-list: Image chaos[edit]

The images collide with each other so that the article looks weird. Someone who have any ideas of howto? My hunch: all images left-floating. Rursus 12:00, 16 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hunch disproven: left-float maex the images overlap tables in the text below. I'll removed my cleanup request myself, and make a private note in my own page. Rursus 19:46, 17 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Canes-Venaticids??[edit]

Do the Canes Venaticids actually exist? An Internet search identifies them with Gary Kronk's Canids, whose radiant is in Canis Minor. He also doubts their very existence. Eroica 13:45, 27 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Canids

Our list of meteor showers doesn't show them. -- Curps 16:28, 20 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Image Veracity[edit]

The image in the history section seems to be flipped. Corona should be on the left and Canes Venatici should be on the right. Perhaps this is a top down view? This should at least be noted.Aeson25 (talk) 15:55, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's from the Hevelius atlas, and so is shown as on a globe, i.e. mirror image. Skeptic2 (talk) 17:09, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Naming of Cor Caroli[edit]

According to this article, Cor Caroli was named by Sir Edmund Halley. However, in the Cor Caroli article, it says the star was named by Sir Charles Scarborough. They can't both be true. Can someone find out the truth and correct the mistaken article? Aerodave (talk) 03:45, 13 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

History[edit]

Citations heavily needed in the section History – my ordinary reaction would be to add a template

But it has become too repetitive by now: some categories of wikipedia articles attract undue WP:SYNTH editors. The statements made in the sections are wild and preposterous and need some citable source to survive. Rursus dixit. (mbork3!) 07:51, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The official story about the emergence of CVn is that Hevelius invented them. The speculations that the figures already were around and that Hevelius put them onto a map is wild-wild-wild beyond reason: such maps must be shown, or the guy who made the speculative assumption that kullāb > kilāb (= dogs) needs to be cited. Rursus dixit. (mbork3!) 08:09, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I strikeout some of my protests by Star tales. Ridpath tell us that they were depicted by Appian in 1533. We need such a map or citation, but now the "official story" is that Appian added them as asterisms in 1533. Rursus dixit. (mbork3!) 08:17, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Dropping sources here Peter Apian and Azophi - Arabic Constellations in Renaissance Astronomy, Kunitzsch, P. and specifically page 124, I actually don't have time for this stuff just now... The sources needs checking: it's probable they don't speculate as the History section of now does, it tries to make some assertments on whether Peter Apian had access to Al Sufi's book. Rursus dixit. (mbork3!) 08:45, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
This map image of Apian's shows that Apians three Canes Venatici occupied the place of Coma Berenices and that α and β CVn were amorphae. Rursus dixit. (mbork3!) 08:54, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please create a redirect page[edit]

Please create a redirect page from Canis_Venatici pointing to

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canes_Venatici

the latin plural is sort of obscure and a redirect page would be very helpful. Thank you.

Done. PlanetStar 20:36, 8 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Asterion/Chara[edit]

In the section "History", the page says this:

In his star catalogue, the Czech astronomer Bečvář assigned the names Asterion to β CVn and Chara to α CVn.

Shouldn't it be the other way? Thanks! Hdjensofjfnen (UTC) 18:33, 13 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Nope, that's sort of the point. Becvar used a lot of weird names, some of it apparently misunderstandings or misinterpretations, but sometimes it seems like he was just being perverse for the sake of it. Some context might be useful though. Lithopsian (talk) 20:19, 14 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Pronunciation[edit]

Hi! I noticed that the current IPA doesn't match with the phonetic respelling, which comes from Space.com. An IAU source gives the phonetic respelling that would match the IPA. Would it be fine to replace it with the IAU respelling/source? https://www.iau.org/public/themes/constellations/ That has it as "CANE-eez (CAN-eez) ve-NAT-iss-eye".
