A fact from Charles Chilton (zoologist) appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the Did you know column on 26 August 2007. The text of the entry was as follows:
I removed this from the Main Page for now: "...that Charles Chilton was the first academic rector in Australasia?" According to Saint Ignatius' College, Riverview, Joseph Dalton became rector of a college, which would apparently make him an "academic rector", in 1878, at Riverview, New South Wales, Australia. According to this article's third reference [1], Chilton first became a rector after his marriage in 1888. Maybe it meant "first rector" in a more restricted sense, such as first rector of Canterbury College. If I am correct, this article needs some editing as well. Art LaPella 17:07, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
I expect the author of the source meant it to be restricted to higher education, thus excluding Joseph Dalton's rectorship over a high school. Schools are not normally understood to have rectors, while universities are. --Stemonitis 07:29, 27 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Oops, missed that, although Rector#Academic rector says "...many universities and certain other institutions of higher, sometimes even secondary, education.". Art LaPella 14:00, 27 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
