History[edit]

Cherry county has a long history of more than "subsistence farming." The area north of the Niobrara and Minnechaduza was part of market cash farm economy from the start. In addition, the area had access to local markets at the Fort and Rosebud. And there are still people farming there today 135 years after the land office opened in Valentine.
