Possible error in "Child Protective Services statistics" section?[edit]

Hey - came across a possible error. I'm new to editing Wiki, so not sure if I should just fix it, or call it out.

Within the section: Child Protective Services statistics, the last line of the second paragraph references Rhode Island. I'm actually not sure why it doesn't specifically mention "Rhode Island", or why it's even calling out data for one year in one state in the first place.

More importantly, however, I don't think the data is correct. It shows an unreasonably small number of CPS cases resulting in discovery of neglect. The reference just leads to the home page of a RI state child advocacy group, not the source data specifically.

I searched for the data and found this link, from the same source. That PDF states that in 2016, there were 14,942 reports in 2016; 5,935 investigations; and 2,074 investigations which indicated actual abuse. That's very different from the 223,956 investigations quoted on the page.

I'd recommend removing this line altogether, as it's a cherry-picked stat for one specific state. If it's not removed, it should at least be corrected.

Child Protective ServicesChild protective services – Article is about the generic term Primergrey (talk) 02:13, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This is a contested technical request (permalink). ─ The Aafī (talk) 07:55, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. If it were a generic term it would need to follow WP:PLURAL and be singular. Merits a discussion.ZXCVBNM (TALK) 07:18, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    • Since the individual agencies are each called "Child protective services", PLURAL would not apply. Primergrey (talk) 16:31, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. I'm not aware of any of them name "Child Protective Service". The plural is inherent, as in "scissors".  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  03:01, 1 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support: Many states and presumably other units of government have agencies that provide child protective services. This article has a list of the names under which such agencies operate. The names of those agencies are proper nouns and should be capitalized. This article, about the general concept, should be lower case. SchreiberBike | ⌨  23:14, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. This is exactly the same case as parliament and department of motor vehicles. It's a common-noun phrase.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  03:01, 1 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per SMcCandlish however, I would go one further and say, it is about "child protection services (agencies) in the United States". The article does not confine itself to, or deal mainly with, the individual agencies in a collective sense. Rather, it appears to deal with the "system", as opposed to agencies, which are part of the system. I do think this could be better named and suggest - Child protection in the United States. Cinderella157 (talk) 00:10, 3 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I also put a {{Globalize}} on it, because it's not a US-specific subject. Could go either way; either globalize now and split later, or treat this as pre-split and focus in detail on the US in this one and write companion articles for other countries. I would suggest the former, since this article is nowhere near the WP:SIZE range that calls for a split, and we're not likely to get it there any time soon.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  00:27, 3 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Criticism Section[edit]

The entire section is less "criticisms" and more "noteworthy cases with large payouts". It then ends with a strange focus on Illinois that reads like a brochure. With the biased nature of the Illinois section and the sensationalism of the first portion the entire section should be scrapped and rewritten, (preferably more broadly and with statistical evidence). 104.33.248.170 (talk) 16:44, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Child protective servicesChild Protective Services – General name of an agency, which is typically written with capital letters. 83.168.137.1 (talk) 21:32, 27 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose - See the move discussion above. Primergrey (talk) 17:08, 28 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose. An individual specified agency would be a proper name, but this generic article is not one of those. -- Necrothesp (talk) 14:04, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
