The Red King[edit]

The list of characters seems to be forgetting someone: The Red King! Why is he not listed? - Mdriver1981 (talk) 19:27, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Merge of Charlie Bone with Children of the Red King[edit]

I merged these two pages for two reasons. One was that their content was almost identical. My second reason was that Wikipedia guidelines for fiction suggest that we should include information about characters with the book article if there is room. No offense intended. : ) Kam Tonnes 21:08, 22 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Benjamin[edit]

In Ben's section, it says it should be noted that Paton said he may be a child of the Red King. The book says something like, "For all we know he could be a child of the Red King." He is not picking Benjamin specifically, just using him as an example.

I don't think he is endowed because neither of his parents are endowed and it never says anything about his more distant relatives.
—14:39, 28 February 2012‎ User:Hiyafromwhereever

There must be some reason why Ben is in the books though. He wasn't even in Book 3 barely or Book 4 and he hasnt really done much. I know he was the reason Charlie discovered he was endowed and played a part in Emma Tolly's escape, but he hasn't done anythng major. *Note: I haven't read Book 5 yet* --Rebeccarulz123 20:20, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Also in the beginning of Book 4 he is briefly mentioned, when Charlie looks at a photo of Ben and Runner Bean and Charlie's face appears in Benjamins yogurt. This may be significant for the series, otherwise why put it in there? *Note: I haven't read Book 5, I dont mind spoilers but please tell me nothing that will completely ruin the story for me.* --Rebeccarulz123 20:20, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've read Book 5 and realized he did take quite a big part In this book, after all without him in the book, they wouldn't have got his parents, the dectectives to spy at Bloor's to find who the "hidden" endowed child is. However there must be something bigger for this for Benjamin and I'm kind of shocked how he just appeared from Hong Kong and Charlie's just like "Oh yeah, hello. You're my best friend but never mind all that." --Rebeccarulz123 00:16, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think that Benjamin could be descended from Tollmeo. It says on the Children of the Red King page that Tollmeo (I'm not sure if Tollmeo was a he or a she) was clever. Benjamin's parents are both detectives, and to be a detective, you have to be smart. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.19.14.26 (talk) 15:59, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Benjamin is probably not endowed because his endowment should have shown by now. On the contrary, there is a tiny chance that he might be because he could have been hiding his endowment from Charlie Bone and his endowed friends. Also, User:Rebeccarulz123, Benjamin is a character in the book because the author, Jenny Nimmo, has to give Charlie some unendowed friends or else Charlie wouldn't have had any friends in the first book. Benjamin is probably not descended from Tollmeo because Lysander would have known since Lysander is also descended from Tollmeo. - Duchess Elisabeth

I don't think he's endowed. I agree with Duchess Elisabeth, though. Just because he's smart doesn't mean anyhting Xwyver (talk) 20:57, 25 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Billy And Benjamin

I have a feeling that there's soemthing more to this because Billy Raven can speak to animals. And he kept saying of how Ben's dog, Runner Bean was evil. There must be something more to this and maybe Runner Bean is evil but we don't know that yet. However, there must be something --Rebeccarulz123 00:16, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

He was just saying that because he had Rembrant with him. I doubt that Runner Bean is going to get a knife and kill Charlie in his sleep. I mean c'mon!--DMF42 08:55, 23 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Runner Bean was never meant to be evil.

I'm really not sure if we can trust Runner Bean. He hasn't done anything evil yet (as far as we know), but you never know what he could do later. That is a good point that Billy said he was evil when Rembrant was with him. Neverthless, that might not have been the only reason he said it. Whatever, though. *Note: I haven't been able to get my hands on Book 6 yet.----ichliebezuko

Runner Bean is about as evil as a mockingbird.

In Children of the Red King, Book 6, the only thing bad that Runner Bean did was fall in love with Chattypatra, Miranda Shellhorn's female dog. 69.19.14.26 16:09, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I believe Billy had meant that, from the perspective of Rembrandt the rat, Runner Bean was "evil". As Billy is incredibly attached to Rembrandt, he echoed the sentiment. .nix (talk) 04:49, 7 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Trivia section Clean-up[edit]

I don't think we need some of the things that are in the Trivia section to stay. If it is a British author, she's going to spell some words in the traditional British way. I don't think we need to list the words she has spelled the British way. Also, I don't think it's nessecary for us to say who's books she's reviewed. What does everyone else think? -Hailey,12-29-06 —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 66.227.158.43 (talk) 14:51, 29 December 2006 (UTC).[reply]

I agree. At the moment, I think only the last trivia item (about the Flames) is worth keeping, but perhaps until we have more than one worth keeping, the others should be left just so we're not sitting there with a single trivia item. (Alternatively, I'm sure I could come up with some decent items to add.) -- General Wesc 20:36, 8 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Charlie Bone's age[edit]

Charlie Bone turned twelve the week before the beginning of the first book (see pages 6 and 89). Given that Amazon got this wrong, I'm not willing to trust them that he was born on December 31, though it fits. The book opens the week after his birthday which is the second week of January. Given that in 2005, the first week of January was only two days, that makes sense, but he could just as well been born January 1 or 2.

I would be very interested in a reliable source (any of the books or Jenny Nimmo herself, preferably) specifying Charlie's actual birthday. -- General Wesc 20:36, 8 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to be some confusion, so here's my math just in case you want to double-check:

  • If born in the last week December 1992 = the book begins the year after of his twelfth birthday (2005) * If born in the first week of January 1992 = the book begins the year of his twelfth birthday. (2004) I'm using 'twelfth birthday' here to mean the birthday when you turn twelve, as the birth itself isn't usually counted.) -- General Wesc 19:30, 4 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Billy Raven's name[edit]

Is there a source for 'Williem', or even 'William'? I would assume 'Billy' is short for 'William', but I've no recollection of either spelling being mentioned in any of the books. -- General Wesc 02:01, 20 January 2007 (UTC) I made it so because Billy has to be short for that I remembered from reading that bill is short for william so I decided to put it there. --lord ciron/lord ciron 2.0[reply]

Hello[edit]

2012-04-30. User:P64 working in green deletes 33,000 bytes from this section.

If you don't like what i did here is the original page. [. . .]
—23 June 2007 User:DMF42

That heading and one line begin the insertion of 33,955 bytes. DMF42 signed only once (#Benjamin). I have "signed" twice (immediately above) which covers all except the 33,900 bytes or so that I will now delete.
I suppose that DMF42 was not the author of this material but a wikipedia beginner who copied "the original" here before revising it, so that another editor would be able to restore it "if you don't like what I did". DMF42 did make three edits that day (almost 1400 edits back in the history!).

Three other editors contributed to section "Hello".

  • [immediately after the veryverylong summary of book one]
Excuse me, but I believe that there is already a page that summarizes the books. It's very, very kind of you, but we don't need a summary of the books. Also, the "hello" page is a large waste of time. There is also a page that tells about the characters and whether they are good or bad. What you typed is very close together, and I don't believe that anyone will take their time to read this article. I don't mean to speak unkindly, but please delete this article as soon as you can. - Duchess Elisabeth —22:58, 24 November 2007‎ 165.91.164.192 (evidently just before login as DE)
  • [at the end]
Is there anything in the Wikipedia Talk Guidelines that would justify the removal of this block of pointless text? I didn't see anything and I'm tempted to deleted all of this as it is cluttering up the talk page. Anyone who wanted the information found here could find it on the talk page history anyway. .nix (talk) 04:49, 7 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Charlie's Family Tree[edit]

I do not think that the section "Charlie's Family Tree", is needed. Also, it doesn't have too much of an important presence and the section is too long. A lot of the people in Charlie's family tree don't even show up in the books.

Whoever wrote this, no offense, but some people think the Family Tree is quite intresting. The family tree doesn't show up in some books so it's quite a surprise to know about Charlie Bone's Family Tree. Duchess Elisabeth

The Family Tree is interesting and useful, especially as a quick reference while reading the books. I do agree that it is much too long. I would suggest moving it to it's own article and also formatting it (if possible) to make it easier to read. .nix (talk) 21:07, 4 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Children of the Red King[edit]

I think you should put a bigger article about the children of the Red King.Cheeseballface 19:56, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The article for the endowed children is very long. I don't mean to offend anyone but somebody should delete the endowed adults and put them on another article. Also, Harry Potter and the Wizard's Rock doesn't have anything to do with this article. Please, do not type anything here that does not contain the Charlie Bone Series. As far as I know, Charlie Bone and Harry Potter have nothing to do with each other so I kindly ask you to please stop typing about things that don't belong here. Character List Problems[edit]

A change needs to be made, in my opinion, to the character list: The whole good/bad thing describing whether a character is a protagonist or an antagonist is ticking me off. Some people have changed sides or aren't even in the books anymore. It should either be cleaned up, or we should make a new page for the characters, as the section is already very long.

And... whoever wrote the section(s) under "Hello" on the discussion pages, no offense, but try to limit yourself next time. 70.246.74.197 (talk) 17:26, 23 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. Whether or not a character is on the "good" or "bad" side (assuming they are on any side at all) should be explained in the character's brief profile. Anything more would be superfluous. I also agree about the length of character section. I think it needs to be moved to a separate article or possibly two separate articles, with one for the main characters and one for the minor/supporting characters. .nix (talk) 20:58, 4 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

His father played the piano, not him. When he first enters Bloors he plays the recorder, then he starts playing the piano. As of the current book he is playing the trumpet. Gwynt (talk) 20:05, 29 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of the Book Summaries[edit]

I removed the book summaries and moved the series list down below the contents. The summaries were redundant as all of the published books (except Book 3) have their own articles with much longer summaries. Book 3 still needs an article/summary if anyone is willing to write it. .nix (talk) 04:49, 7 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Character Lists & Family Trees[edit]

  • I'm slowly working my way through the character list. I reorganized the list into three groups: Bloor's Students, Bloor's Staff and Other Characters. If anyone has any better ideas for how to divide the list up, I'd gladly hear it. I only chose to separate it thusly because most of the action in the series takes place in or around the Bloor's Academy grounds. Hopefully this will make it easier to navigate. I already put the characters in alpabetical order by surname and I plan on going through and revising some of the profiles (same goes for the section on the Red King and his children). A lot of them contain irrelevant information or information that has already been mentioned elsewhere in the article. .nix (talk) 04:49, 7 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I added a family tree for the Red King as his children. I made it with the best of my ability using the information in this article, but I am not 100% sure it is correct. I would appreciate it if someone would look over the information, especially in regards to which families are descended from which children. I did not add the Tolly Family as I was unsure where it belongs. The books say that the Tollys are descended from the Knight of Toledo, however, as the Knight is the father of Queen Berenice all of the Red King's descendants technically also descend from the Knight's family. Unless, that is, the Tollys are descended from any other children of the Knight. .nix (talk) 04:49, 7 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Here is the Family Tree I made for the Bloors, Yewbeams and Ravens based off of the trees in the beginning of Book 6. I'm not entirely sure where it would belong in the article and I would like someone to look it over to make sure there aren't any mistakes. I think it would be very useful, but it don't want it to clutter up with article. .nix (talk) 04:49, 7 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I should mention that I also removed the "Recent Descendants of the The Red King" section as it is, among other things, confusing, hard to read and had more than a few inaccuracies. .nix (talk)

New Page Layout[edit]

The page rabbled on, to be honest, and far too much space was devoted to explaining and describing characters that probably will never appear again, despite them having a prime role in one book (Yolanda Yewbeam and Christopher Crowquill spring to mind). I have, therefore, taken the liberty of creating a new page, entitled 'Characters in Children of the Red King'. This lists all of the characters in the books, and only Main characters are listed in the actual article. Hopefully, I'll have time to improve the reading quality of the article later on, so that more space is devoted to the actual plot as opposed to the article. If we added the plot's then there would be no need to have such long character descriptions, hence we could only state their name, age, endowment(if applicable), and they're role in the books(i.e, Emma Tolly, 12, Flight. Emma was originally hypnotised by Manfred, but after the spell was broken she became a part of the core group.) Also, I have removed characters from the main page who I feel do not play a significant part in the current story, and haven't appeared for a while, i.e. Belle, Naren, Zelda. When the series is finished, and the story resolved, we can go back and revise who played a more important part in the story, or just delete character descriptions from main page and move them to character page.

Or maybe one of you could do it :P Hope you like it , Asf08 (talk) 19:33, 24 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Fix this talk page?[edit]

As another editor requested four years ago I have deleted most of section #Hello, a copy of "the original", with careful notes in green; in effect, a manual "undo".

At the same, in the code I have replaced all triple and quadruple blank lines (many) with two blank lines. I have replaced two blanks with one only before and after section headings because I see that multiple blanks sometimes distinguish unsigned comments by different people.

At the same time I believe I have highlighted in boldface, and simply signed where that may be useful, all contributions to the discussion since July 2009. --only four 2012 and one 2010; all other revisions since 2009 are either limited to the banners or robotic (of course my work is errorprone).

Another editor may be able to take more time (or less time? this took a while) and usefully WP:archive part of this page. --P64 (talk) 20:19, 30 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Must the Family Tree by User:.nix 2008-02-07 be displayed at the foot of the page? If so then it should be moved to subpage (archived, in effect). --P64 (talk) 20:26, 30 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Book 5, Charlie Bone and the Hidden King[edit]

Its remarkable that the original climax, book five, has the least Plot Summary. Where these books were reviewed, probably in school teacher and librarian publications, this book should have received more or more serious attention than most others. --P64 (talk) 19:37, 13 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Chronicles of the Red King (prequel)[edit]

Kirkus reviewed the second book of this new series harshly (as harshly as any review i have seen, but i see only books by authors with biographies here, mainly books with articles here).

(quote) "A prequel spun off from the Charlie Bone series slogs through a second episode hobbled by an unwieldy cast, a Eurocentric attitude, and convenient magic that overcomes all obstacles without much ado. ...
Nimmo endows her protagonist with such overwhelming powers that all the threats and tasks with which he is faced are but momentary challenges, ...
the author repeatedly dubs him a generic “African” ...
(end quote) recommended (or not) for ages 10 to 12

P.S. search "jenny nimmo" at Kirkus Reviews

  • Only one other Red King review is available, plausibly because K reviewed none but the first. "MIDNIGHT FOR CHARLIE BONE by Jenny Nimmo". Kirkus Reviews 15 December 2002. (quote) "Charlie’s adventure adds up to a formulaic, thinly disguised placeholder for the next Harry Potter; a far cry from Nimmo’s eerie, atmospheric Griffin's Castle (1997)."
  • There are contemporary reviews of The Snow Spider and its sequels and I'll try to use in our article.
