I am pretty sure that they have a function in supporting the vocal cords. Also, as far as I know, they are placed differently in men and women, causing the most important difference between a male and a female voice, apart from pitch. I hope someone can confirm this since it would be valuable to add it to the article. --Thathánka Íyotake (talk) 00:45, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
