Date of death[edit]

This gives a date of death in 1959. It also cites as its source for the biography a newspaper article from November 27, 1959, that being the day after his death. In light of this, it seems unlikely that they're off by ten years; what's the specific source for the 1969 date? Steve Smith (talk) 01:04, 29 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It's really weird. At the Edmonton Public library, there seems to be newspaper clippings from 1969, titled 'Dan Knott dies at 80', and other books claiming a 1959 death date. I don't know which is correct, or how we will find out which is correct. Possibly we have the birth date incorrect? Connormah (talk) 04:49, 29 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well, if there are newspaper clippings from 1969, that's probably the right date (and being 80 in 1969 would be consistent with his 1889 birth); it's certainly hard to imagine that a newspaper would have accidentally, in 1969, run a story about the death of a man who had died ten years earlier. How do I cite it? Something like 'Edmonton Journal, 11-27-69'? I'm not particularly sure on this situation, all the written short biographies seem to say 1959, but the newspaper clipping at the EPL says 1969, and age 80. Could we possibly have the date of birth incorrect, maybe being something like 1879? Not sure of the credibility on the newspaper, definately. Should we just leave it as 1959 until we find out for sure? His gravestone will definately have the right years, but I'm not sure I'll be able to do that. By the way, I'm not sure the clipping date is correct, either. It is handwritten on top of the clipping. Perhaps the date is wrong? I'm pretty sure the 'dies at 80' part is correct, though. Connormah (talk) 19:03, 29 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well, who the hell knows at this point? I found another source that says he died in 1959 at age 70 [2], but that's from this summer so for all we know the author just grabbed the dates from Wikipedia and did the math (Lawrence Herzog does good work on local history and I'm sure wouldn't trust us uncritically, but it doesn't seem totally unreasonable to think that he might have grabbed basic data like that from here, or indeed from our other sources). 1879 is a possibility, since the 1889 date has him apprenticing as a printer before he's sixteen, staying behind at age 14 while his father and brother move west, and getting married at 18, but those were different times so that may have happened. If we want to resolve this with certainty, I'd suggest having a look at the Edmonton Journal microfilms for the relevant dates in 1959 and 1969 (they're available at EPL's Stanley Milner branch and at the U of A's Rutherford Library - not sure if UNB has them, but I sort of think not). In the meantime, I'll go with whatever seems right to you; if you want to cite a news article, use {{cite news}} and fill out as many parameters as you can. This is annoying.
