One cannot steal data.. Theft is about taking away property, not about copying or taking away data..

It can be considered a service theft then. The data is being hijacked by unauthorized users for their own ends.

I think that the first user is correct - theft generally requires an intention to deprive the owner of the ability to use it. However, I think that "data theft" is the name that people would use for the activities described on this page, so I think the title should stay even if it is a slight misnomer. 216.36.186.2 (talk) 20:13, 27 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I also was going to comment on Data "copyright infringement". It's not theft, people have been brainwashed by the RIAA. If it was theft, they wouldn't have all of these lawsuits, the police would just pick you up and put you in jail. Exactly what I thought when reading the title. It's simply not possible to steal digital data. You can copy data and then delete it but even if the data is "deleted" it can be recovered, unless it's shreded or overwritten. It doesn't matter what you all think of the accuracy, validity or legitimacy of the term data theft. First of all, if reliable sources approve of its use, it's good enough for Wikipedia. Terminology[edit]

"In some countries this term is incorrect because it is considered that theft is of a thing (material object) and information is not a thing." Considering that "data theft" is an English phrase, I don't see what the laws of a Spanish speaking country have to do with anything.
