I owned the Plymouth version
And all I can say about it is that it was very good-looking, high-performance crap. (Quite a contradiction in terms.) I happened to have an Dodge Omni that I used for parts for the Plymouth fastback. The Omni was an incredibly reliable car--in stark contrast to the two door Plymouth. I stopped driving the Omni only because I accidentally broke a cam seal on the side of the engine while using a cam to pry something (RTFM!).
This type of Chrysler had a plastic ball and socket connector for the five-speed linkage arrangement--right below the exhaust manifold. Plastic and heat don't mix, of course, and the socket was doomed when it was designed, yet never deprecated! Every Chrysler five speed I looked at had disconnecting shift linkage.
The Plymouth fastback caught rubber in every gear while getting at least 35 mpg. Yet one time when I pulled the headlight switch, I found myself holding it in my hand. My girlfriend pointed a spot lamp at the road so we could drive home that night. I think it is safe to say that the design was a triumph of styling and engineering that fell to management dishonesty and incompetence; don't blame the engineers.
Eventually I gave the car away after rewiring the harness at least three times. But first I drove it from NW Connecticut to Western Wisconsin without turning the engine off--in fact this was the last time it started, at least with that engine, as the next time the ignition was turned, the wiring caught fire, but this time for the last time. I believe it was completely rebuilt there, as it was a very pretty car: maroon with white pin stripes, with a black and maroon interior. --John Bessa (talk) 00:07, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
